LANGSTON is a 501(c)(3) non-profit arts organization, established in 2016 to lead programming within the historic Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute. LANGSTON guides generative programs and community partnerships that center Black art, artists and audiences and honor the ongoing legacy of Seattle’s Black Central Area. We support a variety of enriching programs, across multiple disciplines, rooted in our mission and values. LANGSTON was conceived and designed by community members to serve as strong stewardship for this African American arts and cultural hub in Seattle. This reflects community recommendations from a three-year stakeholder engagement process led by the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture. Our mission is to strengthen and advance our community through Black arts and culture.

The Rahk Dance Theatre, based in Georgia, is coming to LANGSTON!

The professional dance theatre’s show, “Dreamland,” will take you on an inspiring journey through the eyes of a young dancer from the streets of New York City who dreams of joining a major dance company.

We have a Black nerd display at the Douglass-Truth Library Branch!

LANGSTON’s Director of Programs and Partnerships Gabriel Teodros teamed up with artist and collector Arnold Nelson (a.k.a. Uzz Buzz) to create “Black Futures,” which features selected pieces from Uzz Buzz’s collection of Contemporary African-American Culture.

From now until September 9, you can visit the display next to the library’s African-American collection, one of the largest collections on the West Coast, featuring over 10,000 titles!

Seattle Black Nerd Festival is only a few days away! Here are a few more activations you can expect this Sunday.

12 to 12:50 PM: “Black Nerds Touch Grass” with panelists Chandrika Francis, Chris Porter, Ashleigh Shoecraft, and Ebony Welborn. Moderated by DERO.
Featuring selections from Cascade PBS’s Out & Back and a conversation about Black folks and the outdoors, this panel discusses what brings us outside, what can make it harder to feel like we belong there, and what happens when we make those spaces our own.

1 to 1:50 PM: “The Natural Magic Panel,” presented by The Black Altar Project, brings together Black practitioners working in hoodoo, astrology, tarot, mediumship, and other intuitive traditions. Together, they will explore how these practices shape the ways we understand ourselves and the world around us.

4:30 to 5:30 PM: “Stuntboy Animated Series Screening and Q&A,” presented by We Up Collective. This panel celebrates Stuntboy, the new animated series produced by Ole Greens and based on Jason Reynolds’s graphic novel.

We’re looking for people to help our team select films for Seattle Black Film Festival 2027!

As a screener, you will play a vital role in shaping the 2027 film fest and contributing to the festival’s legacy. You will
- Watch films submitted on Film Freeway
- Volunteer up to 25 hours of watching and meeting time between September and November 2026
- Provide feedback and critique on films when asked
- Receive an All-Access Pass to the festival upon completion.

Day 1: Friday, August 28 - Programming starts at 5 PM
Day 2: Saturday, August 29 - Programming starts at 11 AM at LANGSTON, and 12:15 PM at Pratt Park with Brown Sugar Fantasy Jam
Day 3: Sunday, August 30 - Programming starts at 12:00 PM (Game Room opens at 11 AM)

Food will be available for purchase at LANGSTON and Brown Sugar Fantasy Jam all three days, and various markets will take place on Saturday and Sunday!
