LANGSTON is Seattle's hub for Black arts & culture; centering Black art, artists and audiences. Our vision is to Cultivate Black Brilliance.

LANGSTON is a 501(c)(3) non-profit arts organization, established in 2016 to lead programming within the historic Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute. LANGSTON guides generative programs and community partnerships that center Black art, artists and audiences and honor the ongoing legacy of Seattle’s Black Central Area. We support a variety of enriching programs, across multiple disciplines, rooted in our mission and values. LANGSTON was conceived and designed by community members to serve as strong stewardship for this African American arts and cultural hub in Seattle. This reflects community recommendations from a three-year stakeholder engagement process led by the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture. Our mission is to strengthen and advance our community through Black arts and culture.

Talk of the Town Semi-Finals: Sunday, November 1, 1:00 to 5:00 PM

Watch emerging young performers competing for a spot in the finals. Cheer them on as part of the live audience! Finalists will be announced at the end of the show.

1:00 to 2:00 PM: Free hot food and haircuts
2:30 PM: Theater doors open
3:00 PM: Show starts

Presented by Laugh Therapy & Plot House Foundation.

Karate is for Ages 7 and older. No experience necessary. Mondays and Wednesdays, 5:45 to 7:30 PM
Cost: Free

Note: There is no class on November 11 due to Veterans Day.

Tyron Asphy, founder of Japan-American Butokukan Karate Association, works with five instructors to offer martial arts classes to students ages 7 and older. His commitment to bringing access to discipline, flexibility, and self-defense to Central District youth and neighbors across generations is invaluable to our community’s overall health and well-being.

We highly suggest that students come with a refillable water bottle and a snack, rested and well-fed, and bring anything else they need to participate in the class safely.

Unite: A BIPOC Improv Jam. Hosted by The Improv Place

Our youth are at risk in Washington State due to Initiatives 001 and 638 on this year’s midterm election ballot.

I-001 would allow schools to give private information to parents, even when kids don’t feel safe sharing it at home.

I-638 is an anti-transgender initiative that would require girls to have medical exams to confirm their s*x before playing sports annually.

Youth deserve to feel safe, supported, and included. By voting no on these initiatives, you protect our youth and generations to come.

2026 has been difficult for many, and Initiative 645 would create more challenges in Washington State.

I-645 on this year’s midterm ballot would cut $13 billion from health care, child care, and K-12 education.

Taxes would increase for working families and small businesses, while wealthy people would get a tax cut.

LANGSTON values radical inclusivity. By voting no on I-645, you show your care for our whole community.

The midterm elections are coming up on Tuesday, November 3. LANGSTON opposes Initiative 001 on the Washington State ballot.

Initiative 001 would change how parents can access private information about their children from schools and counselors.

Our youth deserve to feel safe. We believe young people deserve care, privacy, and support as they grow.

Initiative 638 would change the rules for who can play on girls’ school sports teams in Washington and prevent transgender girls from playing on girls’ teams altogether.

We believe all young people deserve to feel protected and participate in school, including atheltics, without being excluded for their identity.

LANGSTON’s free room rental program is back!

Space in the Place is for Black and Indigenous self-identified artists and cultural workers to develop their work, connect, and strengthen their craft. Need a spot for your band rehearsal? Want to host a table read for your latest script? There’s room for you!

Room Options: The West Room and Conference Room (2R).
