BREAKING: Andy Beshear Calls for Abolishing the Electoral College, Says Candidates Should Earn Every Vote
Andy Beshear made a case for real democracy on national television, and he didn't soften it.
Appearing on CBS's Face the Nation, the Kentucky governor said it's time to abolish the Electoral College in favor of direct presidential elections. His reasoning was simple. "It's the idea that someone would get elected not just knowing about seven states, but having to earn votes all over the United States."
He didn't stop there. Beshear pointed to his own state as proof of the problem. "In Kentucky we will never see a candidate for president or vice president unless they're from here," he said, because everyone already assumes how the state will vote. That means presidential campaigns write off entire regions of the country before a single vote is cast, leaving millions of Americans effectively ignored every four years.
Beshear framed the idea as one piece of a larger package he's calling a "Fix the Darn Government" constitutional amendment, which would also end partisan redistricting, enshrine voting rights protections, set term limits for Congress and the Supreme Court, and overturn Citizens United.
It's a genuinely bold position, and one that would require a constitutional amendment to accomplish, no small task. But Beshear didn't hedge or bury it in vague language. He said plainly that every voter, not just the ones in a handful of battleground states, deserves a candidate who actually has to earn their support. That's the kind of clarity too many politicians avoid.
