Abraham Alexander & Adrian Quesada LIKE A BIRD | 500T 8mm

“I really wanted to harness Super 8 as a bridge between the musical performance of Adrian Quesada & Abraham Alexander which is primarily shot on digital and directed by Tramaine Townsend and integrated with Pat Scola’s beautiful work on Sing Sing which was shot on Super 16mm. Tramaine was able to capture these really special perspectives with the Kodak Super 8 Camera that gave the piece such an inviting texture and allowed for the whole video to find harmony.” Director Greg Kwedar

THOSE NEXT TO US | 16mm

“Since my first steps in filmmaking and still photography, I've mainly worked on analog film, from 35mm still photography, to super 8 and 16mm. I just love the analog photochemical process. In all of my recent documentary films shot in Mexico, I've chosen Kodak 16mm film over digital. When I work on film, the discipline I need before and during the shooting process helps me to be more concise and rigid. It's important for me to choose every frame and every shot very carefully, and this is especially necessary when shooting film. It makes me more aware of every image I shoot. Of course, I also love the sound of the film stock when it runs through the camera while you're shooting. It makes me aware of the cinematic time. Apart from that, the image quality of analog film is very different from digital images. Often, digital images have no soul. This problem is becoming more and more evident nowadays with the global challenges of AI image creation. So, within this context, my choice for analog film is also a political one. I believe we have to resist the contemporary ideology of reducing art projects to content creation; an ideology which is driven by commercial marketing and by the streaming industry. It's all about formulas now. But I consider film an art form, worth preserving and defending.” Director/DP Bernhard Hetzenauer

TRENGELLICK RISING | Hand processed Double-X B&W 16mm

“This film wouldn’t exist without Kodak Film. Inspired by fellow Cornish filmmaker Mark Jenkin’s ‘Bait’ and early films from the 1920s, we set our film in the 1700s in Cornwall and had it spoken entirely in the Cornish Language. Kodak’s Double-X 16mm was the perfect medium to get the look we wanted, which we then took the extra mile by hand-processing the negative (with Kodak’s advice) and deliberately manipulated/distressed it to transport viewers back to that era more easily. It was then scanned and brought to back to the modern world by Digital Orchard at Pinewood Studios in the UK. It was selected at the BAFTA/Oscar qualifying ‘Encounters Film Festival’, and released in cinemas in Cornwall not once, but twice! A testament to the support behind the Cornish Language, and shooting on 16mm Kodak film.” Writer/Director
