Tonight is press night for THE CHERRY ORCHARD!

Inspired by Riverside Studios’ history, this new production of Chekhov’s classic looks back to 1976, when The Cherry Orchard became the first play produced at the newly opened Riverside Studios arts centre.

50 years later, the orchard returns.

Set against the political upheaval of the 1970s, a family gathers in their fading childhood home as debts mount, times change and the world they know begins to disappear.

Curated by BA Film students from the University of Roehampton, Roe-bellious Youth pairs iconic British films with original student-made shorts exploring identity, belonging, rebellion and self-expression.

From political disillusionment and social division to digital dependence, gender expectations and uncertainty about the future, each screening brings the past into conversation with the present.

Featuring If...., Withnail & I, Bend It Like Beckham and This Is England, each paired with a new short from the next generation of filmmakers.

What a wonderful afternoon at Riverside Studios!

A huge thank you to Simon Callow CBE for joining us for such a special conversation, reflecting on his remarkable career and his long-standing connection with Riverside.

And thank you to everyone who joined us in the audience and made the afternoon so memorable. It was a real pleasure to welcome Simon back as part of our 50th anniversary celebrations.

Our anniversary conversations continue next month, when we welcome another Riverside legend, Lindsay Duncan CBE, on Sunday 11 October.

50 YEARS OF RIVERSIDE, THROUGH SIMON CALLOW’S STORY!

From past performances at Riverside to returning to our stage this Sunday, Simon Callow CBE has been part of Riverside Studios’ story for decades.

The rehearsal room is in full swing as our five-strong ensemble prepares to take on 5 actors. 5 plays. 5 weeks.

REP: RADICAL CLASSICAL opens at Riverside Studios next week with Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard, running 8-12 September.

And there’s a special significance to beginning here. When Riverside Studios first opened in 1976, The Cherry Orchard was its very first production, directed by Riverside’s first Artistic Director, Peter Gill.

Now, 50 years later, a new ensemble returns to Chekhov’s comedy-drama, asking:
What must be sacrificed to give way to the new?
