Get ready for some fun storytelling and a snappy craft activity with author and illustrator Yasmeen Ismail! Inspired by the book The Family Quiz by Robert Tregoning and illustrated by Yasmeen, you’ll be making paper crocodiles to take home.

After all that creativity, settle down for another story with Yasmeen – Kiki and Bobo’s Birthday Surprise which will end with a group song.

We've long admired Yasmeen's work so we're delighted she's a part of our festival. Irish-born and Bristol-based Yasmeen is an award-winning author, illustrator and animator. Yasmeen studied at art school in her hometown, Dublin. After graduating, Yasmeen moved to London where she worked on many different projects ranging from advertising and short films to children's publishing. After a few years of working hard in London, Yasmeen changed career and began writing and illustrating picture books. Her illustrations are bright, fluid and full of energy and movement. Yasmeen has now illustrated over 15 books and has written 12 of them. She continues to make books every day. When she’s not painting or writing you can find her drinking coffee.

It's a delight to invite Colourful Minds back for another fabulous story and craft session, this time inspired by the gorgeous and unusual picture book The Cafe at the Edge of the Woods by Bristol author/illustrator Mikey Please, which was the winner of the Waterstones Children’s Book of the Year 2025. Laura will read the book then show children and their grown-ups how to make colourful (and delicious!) cardboard cakes.

Based in Bristol, Laura of Colourful Minds runs fabulously fun and colourful art and craft workshops for all ages.

As well as an exciting festival programme in October, we're also fundraising to bring the joy of books to Bristol schools during the National Year of Reading by getting authors into local classrooms, leading workshops that encourage kids to ‘Go All In’ on reading. We’ll deliver books for each school to keep too.

So to help with our pledge to give back to the community and deliver a successful schools programme, we'd like to say a big thank you to local author Helen May Brian for donating enough copies of her book 'Elvis' to give to each child in a Bristol school reception class.

Adventure story is a fun drama workshop inspired by classic adventure stories such as Treasure Island, reimagined in a modern, inclusive way. The children will become explorers, pirates, ship captains, and treasure hunters as they journey through imaginative worlds using drama games, movement, storytelling, and group performance, while creating their own characters, maps and stories.

Acting Out, a children’s drama company based in South Bristol that has been running for over ten years, has been a part of Storytale Festival since we started in 2019, so it's wonderful to have them back! They deliver high-energy, inclusive drama workshops for schools, festivals, and community events. Their sessions are designed to be fun and build confidence, creativity, and communication skills through games, storytelling, movement, and performance.

📢📢📢 Fundraiser announcement! 📢📢📢

We believe every child in Bristol should have the chance to be inspired by stories, regardless of background or circumstance.

But right now, fewer children are reading for pleasure, and the gap in reading enjoyment between kids from disadvantaged backgrounds and their peers is growing. This affects education and wellbeing, which deepens inequalities and hurts our communities.

We’re working with brilliant authors to bring the joy of books to Bristol schools during the National Year of Reading – but we need your help to make it happen.

Let's get these authors into local classrooms, leading workshops that encourage kids to ‘Go All In’ on reading. We’ll deliver books for each school to keep too.

This fundraiser will cover the cost of books and a fair fee for authors. We’re aiming to reach £5,000 by 9th November, which will allow us to deliver books and workshops to at least ten schools.

Every donation helps create an inspiring author-led event and add their wonderful books in school libraries across Bristol, from Kingswood to Redland.

Please donate today and help more kids in Bristol enjoy getting lost in the pages of a good book and take a step towards a lifelong reading habit. ✨📚✨

Don’t Intrude on my Mood! is a book about a little cat who throws a big tantrum! As a result of his fiery temper, he rants and raves and rants some more – only to be interrupted by his mother, who has some unexpected news…

In this interactive session, children’s author Rea Malhotra Mukhtyar will raise the questions: What are emotions? Can you name a few? Can you remember a time that you got very angry? When you get angry, what happens to your body? How do you feel?

Rea will read Don’t Intrude on my Mood! and, with the children’s help, discuss the images, colours, words and expressions conveyed in the story. Everyone will have the chance to join her in acting out parts of the book.

Rea is an award-winning children’s author, who is passionate about telling stories full of heart and humour.

Born and brought up in Bombay with a voracious appetite for company, she adored books and food in equal measure. Like most grown-ups, she juggles many responsibilities, such as being an English and Drama teacher, a freelance writer, actor and voice-over artist.

Her stories are full of funky hairdos, grumpy kittens, and Spanish soap dishes. It’s hard work being this silly, but someone’s got to do it.

Calling all young writers and wannabe detectives! Children's author Moniza Hossain has a challenge for you...

Taking inspiration from her middle grade book Bad Things Happened Here, Moniza will illustrate the elements of a mystery novel. Using those elements as puzzle pieces, you will have the chance to construct the outline of your very own detective story with its problem-solving main character.

Moniza Hossain is a Singaporean author based in Manchester. She writes books for kids ranging in age from three to twelve and older. Her debut book Street Puppy Masjid Cat, released in 2025 with Little Bee Books was shortlisted for the Hedwig Anuar Children’s Book Award 2026. This year, picture book Ritu in the Sun with Penguin Random House, and the middle grade novel Bad Things Happened Here with Holiday House are published.
