Hey everyone, our market organizer Janna here. Just wanted to make you all aware of an email scam that has been brought to my attention. The email requests that a “refundable deposit” for insurance be sent via etransfer to a gmail account.

I *never* ask you for a deposit and for our holiday events, and I always send an email from our own firstpickhandmade.com webmail, not a gmail address.

Or, in the case of Costumes + Closets, if we are “co-hosting”, the other verified emails will be CC’d so you know they are legit.
For our Costumes + Closets market, you would receive payment instructions for the full amount, no deposit required. Same for any other events I run.

I do my best to keep our events affordable for the community and there are no hidden fees. If it’s not listed in the email, you don’t have to pay it.

Please don’t fall for any of these scams! I am getting them too for other market events for my own handmade business and it’s really frustrating as there’s no way to stop these people.

But here’s some tips:
Only deal with me directly. There isn’t anyone else helping organize any First Pick Handmade, Costumes + Closets or Good Stuff $50 and Under markets that aren’t also me (End Times Garage Sale or Winterluxe Recycled Cashmere). If you are not sure the email is from me, check in. I will never give away your booth spot.

Email is always better than Facebook messages. If you’ve ever done one of my markets, you have my cell number in one of the vendor emails if you look 🙂 Text me, I won’t get mad.

If it’s not a First Pick Handmade event advertised through our usual channels, check in. It’s probably a scam. There are a million fake markets on Eventbrite right now so we can’t even advertise there anymore.

All of our events are currently held at the Heritage Hall and will be listed on their Community Calendar as a cross reference.

We don’t sell any marketing lists, hotel packages or anything else. Tickets are at the door only for any of my events. Booths are not transferable and are only available thru me directly. I don’t ask for an application fee either.

I hope this helps keep our community of makers and sellers safe and always read any email thru carefully, especially asking for money!

Canadian made makes sense to us! We’ve been supporters of Canadian Handmade since 2017 and it makes more sense now than ever before.

We’re exactly ONE MONTH away from our Fall / Winter Trunk Show, taking place Thursday September 24th from 5-9pm. This event harkens back to the very origins of First Pick Handmade: to create a space for independent Canadian fashion brands to showcase their collections early in the season and to allow shoppers a chance to purchase items directly from the designers.

In a world of fast fashion, big marketing campaigns and influencers, it’s too easy to forget that every garment out there is designed and made by a person, so let’s get back to thinking about the things we wear in a more thoughtful way. Let’s expand the appreciation for fashion to not just the garments but the designers and makers who create that piece, people keeping these skills alive in our community and who put care and consideration into each choice along the design process.

We can’t think of a better way to buy Canadian this season and we invite you to join us at Heritage Hall for an evening of slow-made fashion and creative goodness.

Many thanks to everyone who came out to our Costumes + Closet Sale yesterday and our vendors who brought all their amazing wares to the market. We hope you all had fun and found some new favourite items!

We’ll be taking a wee break from socials to get back to work on our own Canadian-made collection because we have *a lot* of exciting First Pick Handmade curated events this fall that we’ll need stock for. Official announcements soon but save these dates to come support local:

Thursday Sept 24 - we present a more intimate trunk show focused on handmade Fall fashion, with collection debuts and small run items.

Saturday Oct 17 - Costumes + Closets is back, with curated vintage, designer resale and local handmade joining forces to disrupt the fashion cycle with unique, eco-minded picks.

First Pick Handmade Holiday - Dec 12-13 Our curated, high quality Canadian Made holiday market returns to Heritage Hall for its 5th year. Find the perfect gifts and support your favourite local artists.

Good Stuff $50 + Under - Dec 19-20 Stuff those stockings and get those last minute presents with fun and budget friendly, locally made gifts for everyone on your list.

Things are looking up if you love fashion and you love vintage: join us at the fabulous Heritage Hall this Saturday June 20th for our Costumes + Closets market, there’s something unique for everyone! 11-5pm 3102 Main Street at East 15th Ave Vancouver ❤️

SATURDAY! Join us at Heritage Hall from 11-5pm for Costumes + Closets, featuring 30 or so sellers of all things fashion. June 20th 3102 Main Street (at East 15th Ave Vancouver) $3 admission for shoppers 15 and over.

Joining us for the first time? Here’s some good things to know:

•We have a variety of sellers, from folks who are selling from their own closets to vendors with retail shops. Not all sellers take card payments but bank machines can be found on Main Street at 14th, 16th and 18th Ave.

•Fitting rooms are limited, so wear something you can easily try stuff on over if possible. Bring your shopping bags too, there’s something for everyone!

•Our venue is pet friendly but things can get hectic, especially early in the day, so plan accordingly.

•We’re *full* for sellers for this one but we’ll be booking for our October 17th event in a month or so.

We can’t wait to see you there!
