As Remembrance Day approaches, our thoughts naturally turn to the brave servicemen and women who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Did you know that during World War I alone, over 136,000 Australian horses (our legendary Walers) were sent overseas to support the ANZACs? Tragically, due to quarantine and resource constraints, only one ever returned home. The single horse that made it back to Australia was a bay gelding named Sandy who belonged to Major General Sir William Bridges, the commander of the 1st Australian Division.
If you want to honour our equine friends for their loyalty, courage, and sacrifice, consider wearing a purple poppy alongside your traditional red one this year. The purple poppy is a beautiful symbol dedicated entirely to the animal victims of war from the faithful horses and mules to the dogs and pigeons who kept our soldiers company and saved countless lives 🐴💜
