Stern Grove Festival is a beloved annual San Francisco summer tradition spanning 84 years and counting. Every summer, the Festival presents 10 free concerts featuring global headliners, Rock & Roll Hall of Famers, Grammy-winners and rising stars. Past performers include Thievery Corporation, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, Thundercat, Fitz & The Tantrums, X, Smokey Robinson, Janelle Monáe, Kool & the Gang, The Psychedelic Furs, Mitski, Pink Martini, Ziggy Marley, Ozomatli, Digable Planets, Carlos Santana, Sheila E., and many more! Stern Grove Festival Association also presents over 30 admission-free arts education programs for youth and young adults in San Francisco each year, fulfilling its mission to make live musical experiences accessible to all. 🌳🎶 On This Day in History — September 16, 1931

In 1931, Rosalie Stern purchased the 33-acre Grove from George Greene, who had once operated a very popular Trocadero Inn. After the Trocadero Inn closed in 1916, the property remained under Greene’s possession until 1931.

At the recommendation of San Francisco Superintendent of Parks John McLaren, Stern purchased the Grove as a memorial to her late husband, Sigmund Stern. The setting was considered ideal for music and recreation, with eucalyptus trees sheltering the Grove from the city’s winds and its natural landscape creating a remarkable outdoor amphitheater.

On September 16, Rosalie Meyer Stern formally donated the property to the City of San Francisco, with the intent that the land be used for free music and recreational purpose.

That gift helped shape the Grove into the beloved public space it remains today—a place where generations of San Franciscans have gathered for music, recreation, and community. 🌿🎶
