While the prices of Apple‘s upcoming smartphone lineup will test the loyalty of iPhone users, the company can count on the fact that its users are very hesitant to switch to another brand. According to Statista Consumer Insights, Apple beats smartphone competitors in terms of brand loyalty, with more than 90 percent of iPhone users in the U.S. saying that they’ll likely stick with Apple when it’s time to upgrade.

The reasons for this exceptional loyalty are multifold: first, there’s the undisputed quality of Apple devices. Even though they usually carry a premium price, the built quality reflects that premium. Secondly, there’s the brand factor. Apple is one of the most popular and most recognizable brands in the world and it to many users, it would feel like a downgrade to move to a Samsung or Google device. Third and arguably most important is the stickiness of Apple’s entire ecosystem. The company offers a wide range of products and services, all of which work together seamlessly. If you’re a long-time iPhone user, chances are you store your photos in iCloud, listen to music on your AirPods and have several other Apple devices at home. In short, you are deeply entangled in Apple’s web of convenience and it would take a lot of effort to get out.

From oldies like Star Trek or Star Wars to recent releases like Dune or The Mandalorian – science fiction remains a staple of the entertainment industry. Statista Consumer Insights data shows which countries like to tune into science fiction movies or series most. More than half of Brazilians and Spaniards say they watch the genre. In the U.S., it's one third of viewers, comparable to numbers in South Africa, Germany and Australia.

When it comes to generations, Baby Boomers and members of Gen X are the biggest fans at 39 percent of each generations watching the genre opposite 36 percent of Millennials and 26 percent of Gen Z. While science fiction has stayed popular throughout generations, the youngest American adults have not developed as big a taste for it yet.

The results of PISA 2025, released earlier today, paint a worrisome picture of the state of student skills around the world. Across the 36 OECD countries included in the study, average performance among 15-year-old students was the lowest ever recorded in all three core subjects: science, mathematics and reading. Reading skills saw a particularly steep decline, with average reading scores falling 16 points compared to the 2022 study. This is especially concerning as reading skills, including the ability to process and evaluate information and think critically, are more important than ever in the age of AI and misinformation.

The longer-term trend is just as concerning. As our chart shows, average scores in science, mathematics and reading have gradually declined since the turn of the millennium, with the decline in math and reading skills picking up pace since 2018. Science scores have been slightly more stable, deteriorating by just 17 points between 2006 and 2025.

The Programme for International Student Assessment, widely known as PISA, was launched in 1997, with the study across 43 countries conducted between 2000 and 2002. Held every three years, it assesses not only what 15-year-old students have learned but also how well they can apply that knowledge to real-world challenges. PISA 2025 drew on results from more than 760,000 students in 91 countries and economies, representing around 33 million 15-year-olds worldwide.

Among AI tools’ many use cases, education and learning is one of the most popular ones. According to Statista Consumer Insights, education and learning is among the top 3 personal use cases of tools like ChatGPT in most of the countries surveyed. As our chart shows, educational use of AI tools is most widespread in Indonesia and India and less so in countries like Germany and the U.S. The differences displayed are more reflective of overall usage levels than of differences in types of usage, though, as learning and education is the second most popular use case in both the U.S. and Germany behind online research.

As powerful as AI tools are in the field of education, it will be important going forward to use them in the right way. As Andreas Schleicher, director for education and skills at the OECD, put it in his foreword to the latest PISA results: “Technology can be a powerful amplifier of learning, but only if students are equipped with the cognitive and metacognitive tools to use it wisely.” He calls for AI to be used as “a tool for thinking, not a substitute for it.”

One interesting side effect of the rising adoption of AI tools is a growing sense of suspicion that any type of digital content we consume may have been created by AI. Whenever people now encounter an em dash – once an innocent punctation mark – the “this is AI” alarm bells go off. After all, the “ChatGPT hyphen” is widely known as one of several tells that a text may have been written by AI. However, the em dash alone doesn’t prove AI authorship. It’s been around for much longer than ChatGPT and many writers continue to use it. When combined with other AI writing tropes, it can be a sign of likely AI involvement though.

To find out how much online content is actually written by AI, Pew Research Center ran almost half a million webpages archived by nonprofit Common Crawl through an AI detection tool called Open Pangram, which uses machine learning to determine whether a text was likely written by AI. The result shows a notable increase in content likely authored by AI since the release of ChatGPT in November 2022. While just 1 percent of webpages under .com domains showed significant signs of AI authorship prior to that date – a sign that no AI detection tool is perfect by the way – that share has risen to more than 9 percent in the first half of 2026. While that may not sound like a lot, it needs to be noted that the sample includes pages published before ChatGPT, meaning that the percentage of AI-generated text is likely much higher for more recent content.

After filtering for websites published after the release of ChatGPT, Pew found that 35 percent of the webpages it sampled in July 2026 showed a high likelihood of AI authorship or editing, versus just 9.6 percent of all websites in the July 2026 snapshot. That goes to show how quickly AI-generated content is taking over the web and that the suspicions regarding online text are not unfounded. Interestingly, the use of AI appears to be significantly lower still for websites with .gov or .edu domains, meaning that government agencies and educational institutions still rely on human authorship to a larger degree.
