We’ve put all of the essays from Counterstructural Commons online! These were originally written as a part of the residency and shared as a limited-run print publication. The collection of essays reflect the work that occurred across 10 weeks, with 8 artists, researchers, technologists.

An intimate, experimental listening series at Oberon Restaurant & Bar, curated by bri~ + máühåñ. Each night pairs a live performance with a DJ set, exploring sound as an interface between electronics, people, and space.

Join Rhizome and Ingrid Burrington (Ingrid Burrington), author of “Networks of New York: An Illustrated Field Guide to Urban Internet Infrastructure,” this Sunday, November 1st for a guided tour of the physical internet as seen in Manhattan’s Lower East Side.

Using the vernacular of a nature field guide, Burrington will identify often overlooked network objects, utility markings, electronic equipment and sensors, and buildings we pass by everyday that are instrumental to global internet activity.

We will meet at 1pm outside of Elizabeth Street Garden. The tour will last approximately an hour, RSVPs are highly encouraged! Link in bio

⛳️Rhizome microgrants are open, Apply by November 20 for grants of $500 - $1500!

Are you seeking funds to help realize a creative web-based project? consider applying to Rhizome’s annual microgrants open call. Since 2014, Rhizome has awarded small grants for the creation of new web-based works. In recent years, awarded projects have included a multilingual archive of printed “Internet directory” books, a browser-based adventure game where you care for “small but alive” creatures, a free pop-up school in Portland, and many more.

This year, we invite proposals in the following categories:

🫆PERMANENCE, in partnership with Larva Labs (digital projects built to endure);
🛠️MISUSE, (projects that misuse the technologies they depend on);
✋HANDMADE, (non-AI works and handmade digital practices); and finally
💬CO-OP (cultural artifacts that result from collective online behavior)

This year, Rhizome is also partnering with Joygill Moriah and Liz Mputu (LVLZ Healing Hub) to offer additional annual grants for artists who exemplify the legacy of digital artist and curator Terrell Davis. This fund aims to support work that speaks to Black and Afrodiasporic experiences, and projects in any category may opt-in to receive additional funding through this award.

Proposals will be reviewed by Rhizome staff and a panel of guest jurors including ✏️ Larva Labs + Natalie Stone, ✏️ Joygill Moriah, ✏️ herdimas.anggara, and ✏️ maybe: annie rauwerda.

We’re looking for compelling ideas and creative vision, regardless of your technical or demographic background. Artists, hackers, researchers, game masters, designers, storytellers, tinkerers, community builders, scientists, archivists, culture workers, are all invited to apply.

With a practice rooted in graphic and interaction design, Upendra primarily works with artists and cultural organizations across editorial, web and interactive projects, including books, printed matter, websites and experimental audio-visual work.

“A computer can never be held accountable. Therefore a computer must never make a management decision.”

On October 28, 6:30pm New Museum, Rhizome will explore Agentic Aesthetics as the next edition in our long-running Net Aesthetics series. Since 2005, each of these panels has attempted to capture a current conversation in artistic practice as it relates to changing internet culture and technology. The most recent, Neural Net Aesthetics, took place in 2023, exploring machine learning and its implications for composing and processing sounds and images.

This event will also mark the book launch of “Intersubjectivity IV: Network Affect” published by Sternberg Press, gathering contributors from the book and artists from Rhizome’s community.

Mitchell Chan (Mitchell F. Chan) maps out different subcategories of games in his new essay “Categories of the Art Game,” ultimately arguing that games have the power to reveal the economic, social, and political structures that shape our lives in ways no other art forms can. 🏓 🧠

“A game designer molds a player’s range of possible behaviors. They chisel away certain possibilities and polish others until they stand out. They build environments that encourage some kinds of exploration and discourage others. They create the conditions for a broad but limited set of player-defined outcomes. In short, they sculpt the player’s agency. That is what a game designer does, and that is the toolset you put in an artist’s hands the moment they understand it.”

Last Wednesday, we gathered at Capitale, a former bank in New York City’s Lower East Side, to celebrate Rhizome’s 30th anniversary and raise funds as we embarked on our next decade. Formerly the Bowery Savings Bank, it was built in the 1890s and designed to resemble a Roman Temple.

Rhizome responded to this setting by paying homage to an earlier artistic experiment with markets: Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T)’s 1971 ARTCASH benefit, where guests were invited to play games of chance with artist made scrip by Robert Rauschenberg ($12), Andy Warhol ($1), Robert Whitman ($3), Marisol ($88), Tom Gormley ($24), and Red Grooms ($51). Warhol intentionally made his very easy to copy, because he believed “everyone should have money.” Rauschenberg took a more aestheticized approach, noting that since money is hard to get, “it should be nicer to have.”

For ARTCASH 2026, in a new period of uncertainty for cultural funding, Rhizome invited nine artists—in ascending order of denomination, Simon Denny (), Manfred Mohr (Manfred Mohr), Beeple (beeple), Canal Street Research Association (Shanzhai Lyric), Morry Kolman (Morry Kolman), Maura Brewer (Maura Brewer), Lovid (LoVid Hinkis-Lapidus), Genevieve Goffman (Genevieve Goffman), and Cory Arcangel (Arcangel Surfware), —to create their own works for this homage. Guests were given a short stack and invited to redeem their ARTCASH on artist-made games, experiences, and installations; from a money laundering simulation to horse race betting.

A live betting system for the iconic video series, Horse Race Tests. Players crowd around placing bets, followed by a short digital horse race. If you win, you collect your reward!

$1, Simon Denny
A plottable note created from a generative model trained on futurist forms. Complex though the image is, with a plotter it would be easy to copy, because–as Warhol said–everyone should have money.

$5, Manfred Mohr
Mohr, himself a pathbreaking computer artist who began making algorithmic work in Fortran, created a $5 bill. Mohr chose $5 because he felt a connection to the number.
