Lee Ranaldo & Leah Singer performing “Contre Jour” at Sound & Gravity at Constellation.

⟡ Contre Jour is a 30+ year ongoing, immersive multimedia performance by iconic Sonic Youth co-founder Lee Ranaldo and prolific Canadian photographer & multimedia artist, Leah Singer.

⟡ Combining live music, shadow play, and large-scale film projections, it challenges traditional performer-and-audience dynamics by making the artists’ shadows an integral, visual part of the art. Ranalda explores “suspended electric guitar phenomena” and Singer’s film frames interact with live shadow play.

Join us on Friday September 4th for an illustrious night of jazz experimentation, all night long

Chris Ryan Williams is an artist and musician based in Brooklyn, NY whose work unfolds through electroacoustic composition and performance installation.

His debut LP Odu: Vibration II, praised by Pitchfork and named one of NPR’s Best New Albums, reimagines a journey through Plato’s Cave.

Williams on the making of his own debut record:
“Kalia’s incredibly lush sound and Patrick’s ability to truly wail on the sax allowed me to approach the trumpet in a more melancholic, introspective way,” Williams explains. “I used electronics as a kind of sculpting tool—as you might use to carve stone or shape a terrain. Each vibration emerges from that sculptural curiosity.”

The CRW Vibration Trio also features contemporary jazz beacons saxophonist Patrick Shiroishi and trombonist Kalia Vandever, who are both making solo appearances later in the night. Get lifted and blissed at Friday night of Sound & Gravity.

࿔ Enter Chicago’s off-kilter folk whizkid, Eli Winter - lucky for us, the Eli Winter Ensemble will be performing at Sound & Gravity this summer, featuring Sam Wagster of Fruit Bats on pedal steel and Tyler Damon of local powerhouse Circuit Des Yeux on drums.

࿔ Eli Winter is a composer, self-taught guitarist, essayist, and Houston native. His music synthesizes aspects of folk, rock, jazz, and devotional music, maintaining a waggish disregard for genre constraints emblematic of Chicago, his adopted hometown. His new album, 𝘈 𝘛𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘬 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵, is an elegantly crafted and vibrant collection that finds the bandleader at the height of his powers:

☾⚝☽ Catch elusive noise master-duo Yellow Swans for an ultra-rare performance at Sound and Gravity this year. With an utterly prolific release catalog, Yellow Swans has been at the helm of noise experimentation for decades, incorporating prog rhythms, no-wave textures, stabbing techno, combining impossibly with droning psychedelia and electro-acoustics into soundscapes yet unknown. This will be their first show in Chicago since 2008 – we couldn’t be more excited for this one, seriously.

☾⚝☽ They’ll be wrapping up the fest at Beat Kitchen on Sunday, September 6th, 10:30pm.

Chicago’s vibrant young “hallogallo” scene has broken out and firmly established itself to much fanfare lately, and for good reason. Drawing from 60’s psych, garage and proto-punk, these bands add a fresh injection-punch of raw, raucous energy to our lineup, and to the young Chicago music scene in general! It’s good music.

We’re lucky to be hosting 3 of the hallogallo scene’s leading bands at this year’s festival - Leroy The Poet, Uniflora, and TV Buddha.

Good news, Chicago - We’re stoked to have Austin’s lo-fi post-rock mainstays The American Analog Set headlining S & G Festival this September. After two decades on hiatus, the band is back and not one to miss!

The American remained quietly influential throughout the modern threads of shoegaze and slowcore, and a string of recent reissues released by iconic Chicago based label Numero Group have put American Analog Set back into public consciousness.
Led by singer-songwriter and guitarist Andrew Kenny, their sound ranges from spaced-out Kraut-influenced near-jam style compositions, to introverted and brooding lo-fi reflections.

Catch them Saturday, 9/5 at 8:45 performing at the Athenaeum, following another headlining set by Son Lux.

If you missed My New Band Believe’s sold out show at Constellation last night, fear not!!
They’ll be back September 5th @ Sound & Gravity - judging from yesterday’s performance, this will be a NO-MISS show. Swipe for a clip from last night’s show.

Frontman Cameron Picton multi-instrumentalist and former bassist of Black Midi, has a talent for capturing ambient anxiety and a rare gift for distilling it into pop.

Out this past April, the group’s self-titled debut is a massive and hallucinatory record. It’s a collection of music that swerves through wildly different emotional and thematic registers, all the while unraveling an endlessly compelling thread of dream logic.

Heady and verbose, picton is an unreliable but charismatic narrator, and together with a cast of all-star players, many of whom you may recognize if you’re familiar with the “windmill rock” scene.

Inspired by Bert Jansch’s hypnotic, hard-driving guitar-playing and Judee Sill’s panoramic pop, My New Band Believe is both all-encompassing and constantly in flux.
