Ghana National Council of Chicago and Africa International House warmly invites you to join us for the inaugural Ghana Flag Raising Ceremony in celebration of Ghana Republic Day on July 1st.
Location: Daley Plaza
50 W. Washington Street, Chicago
Time: 1:00 PM
This historic and meaningful occasion honors Ghana’s rich heritage, celebrate freedom and independence, and come together in unity and pride with the Chicagoland community.
The celebration also highlights the longstanding relationship between Chicago and Accra, Ghana. Since 1989, Accra has been an official Sister City of Chicago, fostering strong cultural, educational, and economic ties between the two cities. The Ghana Flag Raising Ceremony serves as a meaningful reminder of the enduring friendship and collaboration between Chicago and Ghana’s capital city.
Republic Day in Ghana is observed annually on July 1, marking the nation’s transition to a sovereign republic in 1960. This historic milestone commemorates the moment Ghana removed the British monarch as head of state and inaugurated Kwame Nkrumah as its first president. While no longer a public holiday, the day remains an important time to reflect on Ghana’s journey, highlighting themes of freedom, justice, and national progress.
This event is free and open to the public.
