Bud Billiken Parade The official page of the Bud Billiken® Parade, the second largest parade in the United States. In 1921, Mr. Working under Mr. Bud Billiken™. In 1929, Mr. Truman.

The Chicago Defender was founded by Robert Sengstacke Abbott on May 5, 1905. His plan was to use this newspaper to address African American issues. Abbott started the Chicago Defender Jr., a section for children in the newspaper. It was edited by the young Robert Watkins, who was known as Bud Billiken™, and included an application to the Bud Billiken™ Club. It was named after the Billiken, the gua

rdian angel of little children according to Chinese legend. Abbott, David Kellum was a key member of the Bud Billiken™ team and was often called Mr. Abbott expanded the Bud Billiken™ concept to include a parade. Its purpose was to provide underprivileged youth with the chance to be in the limelight. Hundreds of thousands have lined the parade route with millions viewing festivities on live TV. Today, the parade features dozens of bands, drill teams, marching units, floats and more. The Bud Billiken™ Parade is the second largest parade in the United States. It has grown into an institution with participation from across generations and across the country. The parade takes place every second Saturday in August. The parade proceeds south on King Dr. from Oakwood Blvd. to 51st St. and continues on Ellsworth Dr. thru Washington Park to 55th St. where it disbands. It is broadcast live on ABC7 Chicago with picnics and other events in the park throughout the day. Many celebrities have appeared in the Bud Billiken™ Parade. From the past, the parade has seen Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, The Supremes, Roy Rogers, Lena Horne and former President Harry S. In recent years, the parade has enjoyed the company of then Senator Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey, L.L. Cool J, Spike Lee, Michael Jordan, Frank Thomas, Donny Osmond, Queen Latifah, Tyler Perry and more. The parade is produced by the Chicago Defender Charities, Inc.

FRIENDS AND FAMILY!!!

The MBM DANCE COMPANY takes great pleasure in presenting its first Black History Program and Soul Food Dinner Show, scheduled to take place on February 27th at 7:00 pm at 8248 S Cottage Grove. Attendees will be treated to an evening of Black history, dance, and speeches. This event serves as a fundraiser for the company and promises to be a memorable experience. We are eager to share this special night with our supporters and loved ones. Tickets, priced at $20 per person, include entry and a sumptuous dinner featuring an array of dishes, including Baked chicken (Rosa Parks), Fried chicken (Martin Luther King), Pot roast (Malcom X), Corn bread (Harriet Tubman), Sweet potatoes (Ida B well), Collard greens with smoke turkey (Daisy Bates), Spaghetti’s (Dorothy Height), Apple sauce (Sojourner Truth), Apple pies  (Frederick Douglass), and more. On behalf of Chicago Defender Charities, we are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Boaz “Bo” Flemister and Lazarus “Hollywood” Gonzales of the Empiire Dance Team .

These young men were talented leaders and proud representatives of Chicago’s dance community and the Bud Billiken® Parade. Their passion, discipline, and spirit left a lasting impact on everyone who knew them.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to their families, teammates, and loved ones, and we are praying for the recovery of those injured.
