Sheffield Adventure Film Festival presents the best new adventure and extreme sports films from around the world. With an annual festival in March and a year-round programme of events, we aim to inspire the ShAFF community to seek their own adventures, challenge themselves and take action to protect the environments we adventure in. Showing over 100 of the best new adventure films on five big screens in the heart of Sheffield at The Showroom Cinema, and online. The festival takes place once a year but the work of ShAFF continues year-round through our Friends of ShAFF membership scheme that funds school outreach.

🎉 DRUMROLL PLEASE... Our very first Outdoor Writing Awards are here! 📚

Big news, bookworms and trail blazers: ShAFF has a brand new addition, and it’s all about celebrating the writers and books that make our outdoors culture so special. ⛰️✍️

The OWA is open to EVERYONE whether you’re self-published or traditionally published, and four categories are up for grabs:

🏕️ Guidebooks
🥾 Narrative non-fiction or memoir
🧒 Children’s Outdoor Writing (books for children, not by them... we checked, tiny authors are not eligible)
⚒️Made In Sheffield

🏆 Yes, there’s actual cash to be won: £100 per category! Books just need to have hit the shelves in the last two years (1st Jan 2025 to 30th Nov 2026).

And we’ve rounded up a seriously wonderful judging panel: , , our very own , and Jeff Sisson from . The biggest thank you to RWW for supporting and bringing the very first OWA to life! 👏

We are so excited to give ShAFF a brand new literary arm and celebrate the creative, generous and brilliantly impactful work writers do for the outdoors world.

A very special talk is on this week!

Join us as ShAFF founder Matt Heason sits down with local legend for an unmissable conversation about his latest scrambling guidebook Wild Rock.

Hosted by fellow Sheffield festival Off the Shelf Festival of Words the conversation will be filled with stories, insights and inspiration that will hopefully put some new pins on your map for your next adventure.

Hold on to your breathable hat – ShAFF is now two decades old! 😲 So to mark the occasion, we’re putting on a retrospective for the first time ever, with only the very best film shown from each year.

Tickets for the shorts at Sheffield Cathedral on 3rd Dec, and Weekend Pass tickets for the feature-length films on 28/29 Nov are both on sale now. The link is in our bio.  We have a very limited number of tickets available for the retrospective at Showroom, so are staggering the release of tickets. Individual sessions will be on sale in October.

Have you seen the new plans for Parkwood Springs and the old Sheffield ski village? Skyline Sheffield are planning downhill karting in their first phase, alongside food, drink, playgrounds and an “indoor attraction” of some sort too. Ziplines, surfing AND dry ski slopes may follow. What do you think?  We think the plans are potentially very exciting, but alongside our good friends REVIVE SHEFFIELD SKI VILLAGE we’d love to see more firm plans for the return of snow sports to Sheffield – and will be doing our best to make that case. The Oldest Munro Bagger was People’s Choice winner at ShAFF 2026, scoring an incredible 9.7/10 after 100+ audience votes. It’s one of the most popular films we've ever shown, so don’t miss your chance to see it at Showroom next week:

We’ll be screening it back-to-back with To The Sea, another audience favourite this year. It's a funny, life-affirming short film about two friends floating downriver in Sweden, on their homemade raft. It's a genuine adventure, all the more inspiring for being one you could take on yourself.

There are 10 films in total, with a combined running time of 90 minutes.

Family Time screenings at Showroom are relaxed and informal, so don’t worry about your little one asking wondrous questions like ‘Is she really swimming with a whale?’ and ‘Can I climb El Capitan too?’. Inspiring the next generation of adventurers is what it’s all about.

Introducing: The Viewfinder!! 🎥🎬

A new series from ShAFF that goes behind-the-scenes with local filmmakers and adventurers, providing an intimate look at their processes, journeys, experiences and, yeah of course, some nerdy film kit chat.

ShAFF is all about celebrating and amplifying local adventure and outdoor films. While our festival is a fantastic platform for showcasing these finished stories, we realised we could do even more to highlight the talent and dedication happening all year-round.

We’ll be taking a look at filmmaking journeys from start to finish, including the highs and lows, the expected and unexpected moments.

To kick things off, we’re thrilled to share an interview with Sheffield filmmaker , whose two films – The Art of Bea-ing and Running To The Start – were screened at this year’s festival. In this article, Jamie shares his experience filming .ben on his audacious challenge of bagging all 95 Peak District Ethels involving 500km of walking and 14,000m of climbing, all in barefoot sandals!
