Our friends at the University of Sheffield are offering a lecture on the new gothic cinema followed by a free screening of Guillermo Del Toro’s Crimson Peak at the on Thursday 18th June. For tickets (did mention they were free?) head over to or directly to https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/women-in-white-and-the-new-gothic-cinema-reinventing-the-gothic-heroine-tickets-1987308781061?

There has been a revival of interest in the Gothic heroine in the twenty-first century, in big budget films such as Crimson Peak, Poor Things, Nosferatu, Frankenstein and Wuthering Heights. This talk traces the history of the Gothic heroine back to the eighteenth-century novels of Ann Radcliffe, the highest paid author of her day. Paying particular attention to costume and the iconic image of the woman in white running from a dark house, Professor Catherine Spooner explores the ways in which contemporary writers and film-makers have positioned the Gothic heroine as embodying feminist resistance and dark romance.

Three friends leave Hong Kong in search of fortune, freedom, and a better life. What they find instead is war.

Released in 1990, Bullet in the Head stands as one of Woo’s most powerful and uncompromising films, an explosive and emotionally devastating tale of brotherhood, betrayal and survival set against the chaos of the Vietnam War. Often regarded as one of the defining works of heroic bloodshed cinema, the film remains as raw and unforgettable today as ever.

Alongside the main feature, we’ll also be screening the awesome action-horror hybrid ‘The Spirit Hunters by Mikko Löppönen (), plus a specially curated reel of trailers and film ephemera celebrating the era’s explosive action cinema.

As an added bonus for the night, all attendees will also be entered into a free raffle with a chance to win a film-related prize.

Was a real honour to attend the cast and crew screening of ‘Hooked’ last night at the Abbeydale Ballroom and to host the Q and A after.

Seeing the care, love and hard work to bring this story to the screen is a massive inspiration and experiencing how a group of creatives in the city came together to make the film is a real lesson in what can be accomplished when we come together and pull for each other.

Huge thanks and congratulations to for all the hard work and dedication she put in to make the film a reality
