On Christmas morning 1950, Westminster Abbey woke up to an empty space beneath the Coronation Chair. Scotland's Stone of Destiny was gone.

The Stone had been at Westminster since 1296, when Edward I carried it south from Scone, where Scottish kings had been inaugurated upon it. For more than six centuries it sat beneath the English coronation chair.

In the early hours of 25 December 1950, four students from the University of Glasgow decided it was time it came home. Ian Hamilton, Gavin Vernon and Alan Stuart got into the Abbey, while Kay Matheson waited with a car. The Stone weighs around 152 kilograms, and as they dragged it from beneath the chair it broke into two pieces. They carried the pieces out into the dark and drove them away in separate cars.

For the first time in four hundred years, the border between England and Scotland was closed by the police while they searched. The Stone was not found. It was quietly repaired in Glasgow, and in April 1951 it was left draped in a Saltire at the high altar of Arbroath Abbey, the place where Scotland's famous declaration of independence was written in 1320.

It was taken back to London. No one was ever prosecuted. In 1996 the Stone was finally returned to Scotland, and today it is on display in Perth, close to Scone where its story began.
