The SAY Award Scotland's national music prize; celebrating the cultural impact of outstanding Scottish albums. Learn more at sayaward.com

Produced by the Scottish Music Industry Association (SMIA), The SAY Award exists to:

– Enrich Scotland’s cultural identity by recognising, rewarding and championing the strength and diversity of Scotland’s recorded output; past, present and future.
– Stimulate a national focus on music by providing an annual focal point to celebrate it; driving audiences, instilling civic pride and increasing cultural confidence.
– Inspire the listening, learning, playing and creation of music, especially by young people, to ensure the continued vibrancy of Scottish music both now and in the future.
– Enhance the profile, reputation and credibility of Scotland’s artists and music industry; both domestically and internationally.
..in order to strengthen and increase the value of Scotland’s music industry on the world stage: economically, socially and culturally. Placing artistic merit before sales history, genre or record label affiliation, The SAY Award dispenses with categorisation, opting instead for the creation of a bold, unifying platform from which Scotland’s most outstanding albums – across all genres – can be celebrated, discovered and championed. With previous Longlist titles featuring hip-hop, rock, alternative, traditional, folk, classical, dubstep, reggae, pop and jazz, The SAY Award accommodates Scottish music in all its influential, inspiring and idiosyncratic glory. Wielding a £20,000 prize for the winner, 9 runner-up prizes of £1,000 each and a design commission which highlights the enduring links between music, art and design in Scotland, The SAY Award is respected by artists, valued by the industry and is responsible for both a surge in musical discovery and an explosion of impassioned debate on social media.

VLURE ‘ESCALATE’

Powered by their signature intense mix of Ableton-engineered and hardware electronics mixed with live drums/guitars and a feature from Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie, band member/producer Conor Goldie has teamed up with revered underground techno and club producer/artist Manni Dee (Daniel Avery & FKA Twigs) on co-production duties, the band are here to deliver on a reputation as the most dynamic sound of young Scotland. Or, to paraphrase the mantric lyrics powering Escalate’s hammering headrush of an opening track: take it or leave it, VLURE want it euphoric.

swim school ‘Swim School’

Swim School’s self-titled debut is the sound of a young Scottish band coming fully into their own. Nine tracks move effortlessly between hazy shoegaze, grunge-inflected guitars, dream-pop textures and huge indie anthems, anchored by Alice Johnson’s distinctive, emotionally charged vocals. Produced by Iain Berryman, the album captures both the exhilaration and uncertainty of growing into yourself, with songs about desire, self-worth, longing and ambition. Darker, heavier and more assured than the band’s earlier work, it feels lived-in rather than manufactured. Released independently through LAB Records, it reached No.4 on the Official Scottish Albums Chart.

Sonedo ‘From Here On Out’

From Here On Out is the debut album from Japanese-Scottish producer, pianist and bandleader Sonedo, blending jazz improvisation with UK rap, trap, drill and dance music. Across ten tracks, intricate piano, live instrumentation and breakbeat-driven production provide the foundation for collaborations with artists including CLBRKS, P Sweatpants, Kyi Synclair, Lorry, Malachai and Priya. Moving between themes of struggle, loss and everyday life to moments of warmth and release, the album reflects Sonedo’s instinct for bringing different musical worlds together. Rooted in his experiences between Japan and Scotland, From Here On Out captures an ambitious, collaborative and forward-looking vision of contemporary UK jazz.

Michael McGovern ‘Thin White Road’

Winner of the SAY Award public vote, of the album, Michael says 'Thin White Road' felt like a moment of my life captured in time. It was a culmination of about 4 years of songwriting, in a 40 minute album. Numerous trips up and down to the Isle of Lewis. I’d sit in the living room of my great friend Scott C. Park, looking out at a gloomy Hebridean winter scene, trying to conjure up some magic.

Brìghde Chaimbeul ‘Sunwise’

Sunwise is Brìghde Chaimbeul's third album. It follows "the embrace of winter time; the closing in of darkness, the cold, the pull to turn inward", Brìghde says, and the customs of the season: songs and stories told round the fire. The album opens with the waking of the Cailleach Bheur, the hag who brings in the winter; original composition sits alongside the traditional, drawn from School of Scottish Studies field recordings. Colin Stetson accompanies, three uilleann pipers join Sguabag, and her father recites a Hogmanay rhyme on Duan. It topped World Music Charts Europe.
