A new superpower for surgeons 👩‍⚕️

At the Discovery Stage during 2026, we saw AstraNICE present its NICE technology, a near-infrared coating that makes surgical tools easier to identify during minimally invasive procedures. The coating can be applied to a wide range of tools and devices, from catheters and clips to gauzes and implantable equipment.

Europe’s AI bet just got bigger 💶

Paris-based Mistral AI has raised a record Series D led by Samsung, nearly doubling its valuation from €11.7 billion in 2025 to more than €21 billion.

The funding from Europe’s largest-ever tech equity raise will go towards new data centres, greater computing capacity and “bigger and faster” models. Mistral says more than 125 enterprises across 20 countries already use its technology. Europe’s AI challenger is scaling up, from models to the machines that power them.

Dyson CameraJet was developed with a machine-learning system informed by more than 470,000 dental images. It detects the spaces traditional brushing can miss, then sends a targeted jet of mouthrinse between your teeth. Priced at $499.99, would you buy a toothbrush that can see between your teeth?

We know more about space than we do about the ocean 🌊

At the Impact Village during 2026, we discovered Tēnaka and their underwater station built to change that. Placed on the seabed, the device photographs reef life continuously while AI identifies species, counts populations and tracks biodiversity over time, giving scientists and conservation projects concrete evidence of what is actually recovering.

Cancer screening, with a four-legged team 🐕

Dognosis is training beagles, labradors and Dutch shepherds to flag cancer-related signals by leveraging their canine sense of smell. People breathe into a mask, dogs analyse the samples, and sensors track their breathing, movements and reactions for AI analysis.

Early results reported around 90% sensitivity, and a Phase 3 study is now underway across 10 Indian hospitals to help make early screening more accessible.

Metal, but lighter and smarter ⚙️

At the Innovation Gallery at 2026, TETMET presented a new way to build metal structures using AI-guided laser welding. Instead of cutting parts from solid blocks, the technology creates lightweight lattices with precise welded joints. This could be used in aerospace, automotive, robotics or industrial design, where every gram matters but strength still has to stay high.
