the body is the source. it is steeped in experiences, histories, and ephemeral action. it is a powerhouse of all things interior and exterior. it lives in movement. body riot, led by vim vigor’s shannon gillen and rehearsal director katherine kiessling, is a workshop about wild movement, presence, and connection — both with your fellow movers and with parts of yourself rarely explored. each session opens with warm-ups designed to invite space into your form and connections through joint articulations, while igniting strength, endurance, and agility. this work prepares you for movement phrases that challenge your perception of space and momentum; expect sudden shifts in scale, direction, energy, and texture. true to vim’s work, you’ll traverse through expansive phrase work, fusing contemporary action with acrobatic floorwork and human behavior. we’ll uncover internal and external sources of power, merging explosive athleticism with intricate gestural and rhythmic layering. as the workshop unfolds, you’ll move into dynamic partnering, sharpening your ability to read another body in motion, sense shifting energies, and find precise moments to transfer weight, guide trajectories, and ride the flow of shared movement. together, we’ll construct a space where physical investigation becomes a living, breathing story — an embodiment of curiosity, fantasy, and transformation. expect to sweat through limits and discover the unexpected in yourself and your colleagues.

vim vigor reshapes the acting process by merging the transformative rigor of the meisner technique with a contemporary investigation into attention—as a practice, a capacity, and a shared field. designed for today’s interdisciplinary artist, this workshop supports dancers expanding into acting and actors seeking deeper physical expressivity. guided by shannon gillen, the work activates the imagination—using crafted circumstances to access raw emotional energy—while training the attentional systems that make presence possible. drawing from current research on embodied cognition, participants enter a practice that doesn’t narrow but widens perception. presence emerges not through self-monitoring, but through attunement—to others, to circumstance, and to what is unfolding now. you’ll push the edges of your craft—uncovering emotional stakes, transforming movement into meaning, and forging relationships that feel urgent and deeply human. presence here is not a resource to be extracted or optimised, but something cultivated together. the studio becomes a sanctuary for sustained attention—where time slows, stakes sharpen, and performance emerges from genuine contact rather than forced display. you’ll leave with tools to build characters from the inside out—visceral, resonant, and engaged—training not just what you express, but how you attend to the ever-changing moment.

what speaks through the body is a confession of everything that your mouth has refused to form into words. in this four-day workshop, we aim to find out what it is that drives us and discover if and how we can transform the narratives we construct through movement, language and performance. we move between freedom and restriction, willingness and rebellion. we choose to switch between instinct and information. we drift, we flow, we cut between physical qualities and psychological states that co-exist: belonging to each other yet simultaneously striving to maintain their identity. we bring structure to improvisation and invite freedom to invade what is set. we dissociate, we black out, we remain present.

in this research, we explore the space where physicality meets emotion — where story is born not from words but from the body itself. inspired by a background in raw, pulsating movement and deeply human, cinematic storytelling, i invite you to dive into what it truly means to move: to be alive, playful and vulnerable. we begin by awakening our senses — feeling weight, pulse and rhythm — allowing movement to become an act of listening rather than performing. through improvisation and guided exploration, we play with rhythm, texture, energy and emotion, shifting between chaos and precision, softness and attack, groove and stillness. these contrasts reveal authenticity — the place where we stop dancing and start being. storytelling lies at the heart of the practice, and the body becomes a living text, capable of expressing humour, fear, tenderness and absurdity — often all at once. we ask questions through movement: what happens when my body tells a story my mind doesn’t yet understand? how do we embody emotion rather than perform it? you’ll be invited to create and destroy worlds, to layer rhythm with theatricality and to surrender to presence, rhythm and play. by the end, you may not remember the steps — only the feeling of being utterly alive, free and human.

through an artistic lens, we will turn movement principles inside out, seeking variability and expanding both our intellectual and physical horizons. this practice invites awareness of how we move, think, and sense — treating the body as a site of knowledge, imagination, and adaptation. we will explore the use of image and visualisation in shaping physical work and enhancing artistic and athletic performance. together, we will redefine the building blocks of human movement, identify habitual patterns, and cultivate an environment where new and more efficient possibilities can emerge. problem-solving and strategic thinking will be explored through situational games and tasks, working with tools and partners designed to reveal physical blind spots and familiarise us with sincere failure as an essential part of learning. voice work and theatrical methods will foster performativity and presence. we will explore embodiment as a dialogue between intellect and instinct, developing versatile performers capable of shifting between precision and spontaneity. ultimately, the workshop offers participants the tools to move with intention and enrich the conversation we are having with ourselves and others.
