Founded in 1996, the Berlin Biennale is a forum for contemporary art. The 14th Berlin Biennale will take place in the summer of 2027.

The Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art takes place every two years at varying locations in Berlin and is defined by the unique concepts of its renowned curators. It promotes experimental formats and provides the appointed curators with the space and freedom to present the latest relevant and challenging positions independent of the art market and collection interests. Each edition brings together artists, theorists, and practitioners from different fields to enable them to enter into a dialogue with the city of Berlin and its public. The German capital is constantly changing, thus remaining fragmented, diverse, and contradictory. The Berlin Biennale explores artistic developments to present the unseen and the unfamiliar against the backdrop of this stimulating atmosphere. Participation in the exhibition has contributed to numerous young artists achieving international status. In 1998, the 1st Berlin Biennale took place founded on the initiative of Eberhard Mayntz and Klaus Biesenbach—founding director of Kunst-Werke Berlin. The Berlin Biennale is organized by KUNST-WERKE BERLIN e.V. Its significance for the cultural landscape is reflected in the patronage granted by the Kulturstiftung des Bundes (German Federal Cultural Foundation), which in turn receives funding from the Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien (Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media).

Gernot Wielands Videoinstallation „Family Constellation with a Fox [Familienaufstellung mit einem Fuchs]“, die erstmals auf der 13. Berlin Biennale in Zusammenarbeit mit Phileas – The Austrian Office for Contemporary Art präsentiert wurde, ist ab sofort bis zum 18. April in seiner Ausstellung „Landscapes“ bei Phileas in Wien zu sehen!

Ein Teil von Gernot Wielands Film thematisiert einen Vorgang, dessen Dringlichkeit man sich bewusst ist, der bislang jedoch nur selten erfolgreich in die Tat umgesetzt wurde: die Heilung der Gesellschaft von den traumatischen Folgen der männlich dominierten, kolonialen westlichen Kunstgeschichte. Therapiemittel der Wahl ist die Familienaufstellung. Die Stellvertreter*innen sind Keramikfiguren, welche Gemälde „großer Meister“, aber auch Mutter, Vater, das Ego, die Freud’sche Psychoanalyse – und einen Fuchs – repräsentieren.

Gernot Wieland’s video installation “Family Constellation with a Fox”, first presented at the 13th Berlin Biennale in collaboration with Phileas – The Austrian Office for Contemporary Art, is now on view until April 18 in his exhibition “Landscapes” at Phileas in Vienna!

In his film, Gernot Wieland addresses a process whose urgency we recognize, yet which has rarely been successfully put into practice: healing society from the traumatic legacy of male-dominated, colonial Western art history. The therapeutic tool of choice is the family constellation. Its representatives are ceramic figures that stand in for “Old Master” paintings, but also for mother, father, ego, Freudian psychoanalysis—and a fox.
