NAV CANADA 101: What is a cable marker?

A wire you can't see is a hazard you can't avoid. That's why cable markers exist. These distinctively shaped spheres and cylinders are placed at cable crossings near airports, over rivers and other areas where wires pose a risk to low-flying aircraft.

Visible from at least 4,000 feet away, they're hard to miss, and that's exactly the point.

Un câble que l’on ne voit pas est un danger difficile à éviter. Voilà pourquoi les balises de câbles existent. Ces sphères et cylindres aux formes distinctives sont placés aux traversées de câbles près des aéroports, au-dessus des rivières et dans d’autres zones où les câbles présentent un risque pour les aéronefs volant à basse altitude.

Visibles à plus de 1 200 m (4 000 pi), ces balises sont impossibles à manquer... et c’est justement le but.

NAV CANADA operates across this country on land that has always been home to First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we pause to honour the Survivors of residential schools, remember the children who never came home and acknowledge the ongoing impact of that history on Indigenous communities.

We believe that reconciliation involves moving beyond words and into active learning.

This year, our employees are taking part in the KAIROS Blanket Exercise. Facilitated by Santele's Healing Circles and led by Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers, this interactive experience asks participants to step onto blankets representing Turtle Island. Through First Nations, Inuit and Métis storytelling, our employees will engage intellectually and emotionally with the history of pre-contact life, colonization and resilience. Through active listening to Indigenous perspectives, we are deepening our understanding of difficult truths and reflecting on the role all Canadians play in reconciliation.
