After an incredible undercurrents festival, we’re ready to do it all again! 🌊

We are seeking local French and English language works, as well as national tour-ready productions in either language. Applications will be accepted until March 25, 2026, and our form will remain open for projects interested in 2028.

undercurrents dedicates significant resources and care to each show, making the festival highly competitive and selective. Our priorities include centering BIPOC, QTBIPOC, Deaf and Disabled+, and 2SLGBTQ+ artists, and developing high-quality local work that strengthens and uplifts Ottawa’s performing arts community.

We also extend a direct invitation to Indigenous artists to submit proposals or connect with us. We are committed to building meaningful relationships and creating space for Indigenous works as defined by their creators. Projects or ideas in all stages of development are welcome.

We can’t wait to learn about what you’re creating!

In second grade, 7-year-old Donny gets into an altercation with a classmate during recess. This schoolyard conflict triggers a series of events that reach the highest levels of the Department of Education and test Donny and his family's resilience in the face of injustice.

In this solo show, told from the perspective of his mother, the playwright, TED Talks, poetry, slam, and documentary theatre intertwine. “Ça rime avec vinaigre (Rhymes with Vinegar” is based) on the real-life experiences of this boy and his loved ones to highlight the systemic inequalities that persist in our society. Presented in French with English captioning, this David-and-Goliath-esque story lifts the veil on the insidious nature of systemic anti-Black racism in schools.

September 2022 – Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman, died in Tehran while in the custody of the "morality” police after she was arrested for “improper hijab”. Days after her death, protesters flooded the streets chanting “Zan, Zendegi, Azadi.”

“Women, Life, Freedom.”

“Sound” carries the echoes of generations of women living under oppression, their moments of silence, survival, and defiance merging into one collective voice. It serves as proof that in a place designed to erase them, to exist is to rebel. “Sound” is both intimate testimony and an urgent political act. It is storytelling as resistance, performance as protest, and you get to be its witness.

When Will returns home to his family’s farm after graduating from university, he feels like an outsider. His neighbours don’t remember him, his dad doesn’t know what to do with him, and he can’t find a job. When he notices his neighbours up in arms over the recent wind farm development, he jumps at the chance to join in the conversation and get to know his neighbours better… and maybe write his first big play while he’s at it. The deeper he digs, however, the more he realizes that his neighbours are falling for dangerous conspiracies and his own dad may be slipping out into the fringes with them. “Wind” is a documentary theatre play that blends humour, politics, and family dynamics into a beautifully nuanced story that is sure to spark discussion.
