This year was a challenge. Within a short period of time we lost our vendor coordinator, our volunteer coordinator, our sound guy, and our photo op company and last year lost our social media person. Most because of career commitments elsewhere, and Katrina is on Maternity and now the mom of beautiful twins. Visha Loo even though had the biggest scheduling conflict still organized everything for the VIP party from booking the venue and talent. And everyone at the VIP Party delivered!!! My transport, celebrity handlers, security staff, photo op staff, box office and green room people were amazing. Small crew of volunteers that were leaned on hard.
With all the changes I was left was a dedicated solid team that did everything to ensure the best experience for fans, the energy of these people was amazing, no one was left behind and we covered one another if someone was crashing. We are fans ourselves and volunteers.
I wish I slept on a bed of cash like people have told me but the reality is we are the longest and largest Horror Convention in Canada and the only one of the two big ones in Canada, we are Canadian. I operate in USD for expenses and paid in CDN. Current conversion rate is 1USD =1.42CDN. The fact that we are still standing since 2010 where we weathered a pandemic in which we honored every vendor's table purchase even though we were government ordered to shut down during Covid after spending the money we collected on expenses. This shows the resilience of the Convention. Something I am very proud of and not just anyone can attract the talent to Calgary like the Calgary Horror Con has. We come a long way from an idea and zero investment, we truly created something from nothing.
Over the last couple of years we gave out 500 passes each year to organizations such as Kids Up Front, various at risk communities, low income families and various support organizations such as for my peeps on the spectrum. My crew in the theater raises money for charity annually with 100 percent of the money going to the charity by vendor's providing free product for sale. We had also provided tables to other charities as well. It isn't just about bringing Horror fans together it is about building community and coming together as a community.
In creating a safe space for everyone I have blocked a lot of people promoting hate. There simply is no place for it, I am no better than anyone regardless of where anyone is in their life's journey. I have been under constant attack on this page and all over social media, I don't want people to defend or engage, talk is cheap but what I assure you what you see is what you get, I am the same in private as in public and I am an oversharer so very public about lots most wouldn't because if I can save anyone from making the mistakes I have, I would do that.
I am a divorced father with 2 adult children, one living with her mom and one in a group home with other people on the Autism spectrum. I have no crimal record and have had to obtain several criminal background checks to work with youth and at risk people going as far back as being a junior and junior mini basketball coach in my early twenties. Spent a decade or so holding a security license as well as 6 years in the Canadian Armed Forces Infantry Reserve. I am a champion for the odd balls, the Misfits, the vulnerable and my fellow humans, we are truly all connected. I consider my collective the floating dumpster fire of the divine.
