The 2010’s – An event like no other

By the 2010s, Festivale was one of Tasmania's premier events, drawing around 28,000 annual visitors to Launceston's City Park. Aligning with the state's growing culinary reputation, the event pivoted heavily toward artisan producers. Stallholders were carefully selected to showcase Tasmanian cool-climate w**es, craft b**rs, boutique ciders, spirits, and gourmet produce. Capitalising on the era's food television boom, Festivale introduced the ‘Chefs in Action Marquee’, where renowned celebrity chefs gave live cooking demonstrations using fresh local ingredients. In 2014, the event added a dedicated stand-up comedy program to the entertainment mix. The decade cemented Festivale as a multi-generational, award-winning event and one of the biggest moments on the Tassie event calendar.

The 1990’s – A new home in City Park.

The 90's marked a defining chapter in Festivale's history. After outgrowing Launceston's city streets, the event found its permanent home in the beautiful Launceston City Park in 1996. The move transformed Festivale into Tasmania's premier food and w**e event, with more space for gourmet producers, award-winning cool-climate w**es and local entertainment. Music filled the park as local pub-rock, folk, and acoustic acts performed on new central stages. Simultaneously, a vibrant lineup of buskers, magicians, puppeteers, accordion players, and stilt-walkers brought colour and energy to every corner. Entertainment evolved into a relaxed, sit-down event, with attendees spreading picnic blankets across the grass lawns beneath oak trees. The City Park era had officially arrived - and Festivale would never look back.

⚡ FLASHBACK FRIDAY ⚡A trip down memory lane celebrating 40 years of Festivale!

The 1980’s – Where it all began:
Festivale was born in 1988 as part of Australia's Bicentenary celebrations, beginning as a vibrant multicultural street party at the Australian Italian Club before spilling into the streets of Launceston's C*D. For 8 unforgettable years, the city came alive. Streets surrounding the mall were closed to traffic and transformed into a bustling open-air festival, with food stalls, gazebos and long trestle tables lining the footpaths outside local businesses. Visitors wandered freely between authentic Italian, Greek and Indian cuisine, while Tasmanian w**es quickly became part of the experience. There were no grand stages in those early days. Instead, musicians performed from the balconies of historic buildings, including the Launceston Hotel, while others played from the backs of flatbed trucks parked in the middle of the closed streets. Traditional cultural dance groups, buskers, street performers, and entertainers filled every corner, creating an atmosphere unlike anything Launceston had seen before. What began as a community celebration laid the foundations for the Festivale we know and love today.
