We were pleased to welcome Ward 5 Tucson City Council Member Selina Barajas and approximately 50 students from the University of Arizona’s Humanities class, led by Dr. Jacqueline Barrios, to the Tucson Wagon & History Museum!

Council Member Barajas and several Tucson Rodeo Parade Committee members shared the rich history of Tucson’s Southside, the museum, and the Rodeo Grounds.

The students are participating in a mapping assignment that takes a deep dive into the many uses, events, and cultures that have shaped—and continue to pass through—these historic grounds.

Thank you to Dr. Barrios, Council Member Barajas, and the students for joining us in exploring and preserving the history and cultural heritage of Tucson’s Southside!

Tucson has one of the most unique school traditions in America. Every February, schools across the area actually give students TWO DAYS OFF for a rodeo. 🤠🌵

Known as Rodeo Break, the tradition allows students and families to celebrate La Fiesta de los Vaqueros, the famous Tucson Rodeo that’s been part of the city’s history since 1925.

And this isn’t just a small local event.

The celebration brings professional rodeo competitors, thousands of spectators, and one of the largest non-motorized parades in the country.

For generations, Tucson students have grown up looking forward to Rodeo Break, with schools closing on Thursday and Friday during rodeo week.

The tradition is still going strong more than 100 years later.

In fact, Tucson Unified and several surrounding school districts already have February 25 and 26, 2027, marked as official Rodeo Break days, giving students a four-day weekend.

While most cities celebrate their local traditions with festivals and parades, Tucson actually builds one into the school calendar.

Today, Chairman Stan Martin and his wife Loretta Kisch Martin enjoyed their ride through the Rex Allen Days Parade in Willcox, Arizona. They rode in a surrey used in the filming of the movie Oklahoma. Thank you Suzanne Hartline King for photographing them.

Also rolling was a buckboard used in the TV show High Chaparral and a mudwagon used in many western movies including Rio Bravo all part of the Tucson Rodeo Parade and Museum .

Thank you to Jesse Bell for doing a great job taking control of a horse when a harness failed.

In 2 weeks we'll be in Tombstone for their Helldorado Days Parade.

Another fantastic “meeting of the minds” as we continue the process of selecting the Grand Marshal for the 2027 Tucson Rodeo Parade!

The Grand Marshal Selection Committee focuses on individuals and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to our community. We’re excited about the possibilities and look forward to announcing our 2027 Grand Marshal in early January!

Last night, our outreach team had the honor of attending the **Celebration of S-cul Son 251**, Tucson’s 251st birthday! 🎉🌵

The evening brought together organizations celebrating Southern Arizona’s rich history, along with live music 🎶, musket demonstrations 🔫, and plenty of opportunities to connect with others who share a passion for preserving our community’s heritage.

One of the highlights was making a great connection with the **Buffalo Soldiers** regarding the restoration of one of our historic wagons, which was used by Buffalo Soldiers at **Camp Little in Nogales**. 🤠🐎 We’re excited about the possibilities of preserving this important piece of Arizona history!

Representing the **Tucson Rodeo Parade Committee** were Charly Toohey, Don Moore, Herb Wagner, Kip Overstreet, Stan Martin and his wife, Loretta. 🤠❤️

A wonderful evening celebrating Tucson’s history, heritage and the people working to keep those stories alive!
