Saturday May 23rd, Jakob Heinemann comes to Wave Archive. Jakob is joined by amazing local artists Slán and Britt Warner.

Jakob is presenting /////splinterings///// an approximately 25 minute work for double bass, live electronics and preparations. The piece comprises a spectral exploration of the timbres embedded within the bass itself. Custom-built electronics detect the various frequencies played by the bass, voicing these as a sine tone, which then inform the improvisational choices made by the performer in a feedback loop. The resultant texture is an expanded sonic field, constantly morphing, that saturates the performance space. The piece uncovers a variety of auditory phenomena, such as timbral beating, otoacoustic emissions, and spacialization effects, creating a sense of “living” sound that enters and inhabits the space along with the performer and audience. This piece has been supported in the past by dexFest in Los Angeles and EDME New Music Festival in Eugene, OR

Jakob Heinemann is a composer, bassist, and sound artist whose work bridges improvisation, composition, and acoustic ecology. Originally hailing from Wisconsin, and now based in Los Angeles, his music reflects a deep engagement with place, texture, and listening practices. Heinemann’s compositions often integrate field recordings, extended techniques, and modular electronics, earning support from the Swiss Arts Council, Madison Arts Commission, Chicago DCASE and others. Described as having “a distinctive compositional voice” (Bob Osborne), his works have been premiered nationally and span solo, chamber, and electroacoustic formats. His albums Opacity (2023) and Horizon Scanners (2024, Clean Feed) received critical acclaim for their immersive sonic worlds. Heinemann serves as Vice President of the Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology, and is currently pursuing an MFA at California Institute of the Arts.

Ora Cogan comes to Tucson May 8th at Slow Body Beer! Advance tickets available now, link in our bio or at desertdrone.org local support from Female Gaze and Dollhouse. Supporting her new album on Sacred Bones "Hard Hearted Woman".

Ora Cogan’s music is alchemical: part instinct, part ritual, and always conjured from the edges where life feels sharpest. With Hard Hearted Woman, she mixes haunted folk, psych rock, and a shadowy strain of country, building a realm where catharsis feels lush, mysterious and vital. Shaken by the tenor of modern life, Cogan pulled in a circle of kindred musicians and made a record shaped by someone who has looked into the abyss and decided, again and again, to choose curiosity.

Hard Hearted Woman grew out of a blur of cold-water plunges, long river swims, late-night ruminations with friends on art and politics, and long drives through the rural Lillooet landscape to visit her godmother. Alongside her band and guests from both the country and experimental worlds, she recorded with David Parry (Loving) at Dream Club in Victoria, B.C., as well as in her studio in Nanaimo, and remotely with Tom Deis. The result glows like something pulled from smoke and seawater — intimate, shimmering, and carved with wit as much as grief. It’s a swirling, jewel-toned ode to all the angels and the demons.
A work of devotion to mystery, to community, and to the strange power of making art in a fractured world, Hard Hearted Woman is a record about hardness and resilience; it’s the shell we grow so our most human, breakable selves can survive. Hard Hearted Woman is for anyone trying to stay open, even when the world makes that feel impossible.
