As the last of nine theaters from the 1950s heyday of East Liberty, the Kelly Strayhorn plays a key role in the transformation of East Liberty into a welcoming and dynamic town-within-a-city by using the arts as a catalyst for continuing community revitalization. Kelly Strayhorn Theater is an intimate, professionally-equipped, 350-seat multiple-use performance venue. With a commitment to support the burgeoning arts community in the city of Pittsburgh, the theater serves as an ideal place for emerging local artists, regional artists and arts organizations to take risks and present new work.

Honestly, Rome wasn't built in a day. It's always incredible to think about how much an artist and the collaborators have to invest before a show can go world premiere. We got some lovely behind the scenes photos from the WITH OURSELVES, WITH EACH OTHER (WOWEO) team.

According to artist Maree ReMalia on IG:

"Seeds of WOWEO surfaced at Hatch’s River Mountain Retreat in 2022. In 2024, thanks to the extraordinary .arts.collective, the work officially began taking shape in Hatch’s Nest Residency at . What started with vocal experiments, writing, movement, & explorations of grief & joy has grown into a multidisciplinary performance weaving remembrance of my father, adoption and the complexities of early separation, alongside humor & celebration. We’re only days from our premiere with lead presenter - longstanding and beloved and I’m feeling immense gratitude for the journey that has brought us here: 4 residencies & in-process showings across PGH & NYC, community events, support of Hatch, KST, & the incredible artists, collaborators, presenters, & audiences who have nurtured this work. As the project has grown, so has the team around it, with longtime collaborators & new creative partners each bringing their artistry, perspectives, and care to the process. I’m so grateful to everyone who has supported the work as I’ve ventured into singing, storytelling, & solo performance—new and often scary territory."

Freshworks: chronicles of a crazy girl by Pittsburgh rapper and vocalist lys scott is coming up soon!

The title of this performance in progress comes from their feeling of living authentically sometimes meant being called the "Crazy Girl"

As a first-generation LGBTQIA+ Thai American artist, lys brings their fearless storytelling and multidisciplinary performance style together.

We will get to experience inside lys’s inner world – a whimsical, nonlinear journey exploring the liberation of individuality, sexuality, and relationships with their immigrant family.

At last Monday’s dinner, Maree shared how the work came together, and we had a chance to dive deeper into some of the themes behind WOWEO with Kelly Hughes, Founder & Executive Director of Foster Love Project. Lots to reflect on arts as a healing tool, adoption experience, foster care, and how we can all contribute to a community of care.
