Farm Aid

Farm Aid Building a system of agriculture that values family farmers, good food, soil, water & communities.

Farm Aid’s mission is to build a vibrant, family farm-centered system of agriculture in America. Farm Aid artists and board members Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews and Margo Price host an annual festival to raise funds to support Farm Aid’s work with family farmers and to inspire people to choose family farm food. For more than 35 years, Farm Aid, with the support of the artists who contribute their performances each year, has raised more than $78 million to support programs that help farmers thrive, expand the reach of the Good Food Movement, take action to change the dominant system of industrial agriculture and promote food from family farms.

Forty years ago this past weekend, nearly 2,000 delegates arrived in St. Louis for an unprecedented gathering: the United Farmer and Rancher Congress.

Not long after the first Farm Aid concert raised 7 million dollars in September 1985, several movement leaders and grassroots organizations began talking about the need for a Farmers’ Congress – not only to put forward concrete proposals to help end the farm crisis, but to make a powerful show of unity.

In the midst of the farm crisis, the delegates of the United Farmer and Rancher Congress developed a participatory democracy in action.

Eat local. Support farmers.

From September 19-26, we’re partnering with local businesses to serve up a Taste of Farm Aid: a week-long celebration of family farmers, local food and the people who bring it to the table.

Each participating business will feature a special menu item connected to a local farm and a portion of the sales from that item will be donated to Farm Aid.

Wendell Berry was not only a poet, novelist and essayist — he was also a farmer. He shared Farm Aid's vision of building a vibrant, family farm-centered system of agriculture in America and a national food economy made up of many local, rural economies.

In 1995, Berry participated in Farm Aid’s Town Hall, where farmers from all over the country had a chance to speak directly to Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman and other public officials.

When Berry had the microphone, he spoke to existential dilemmas that we continue to wrestle with to this day.

The death of Wendell Berry leaves a tear in the fabric of American agriculture and rural culture. We’ll miss his voice as a passionate and creative advocate for family farms and the importance of life in rural communities across America.

Industrial agriculture does not serve family farmers, our economies or public well-being.

Instead, we continue to see the negative impacts of unchecked market power and the loss of family farmers from the land.

Farm Aid works to build an agricultural system that values family farmers, good food, healthy soil and water, and strong rural communities.
