Nobody agrees on exactly when Twin Sisters Dance Hall, south of Blanco, was built. The Austin Chronicle says German immigrants built it in 1879, other accounts say 1870, and the club's own history says Max Krueger made it a dance hall with a regular band in 1875, so we stay with the 1870s.

What is documented is how it was saved. In 1918 the Twin Sisters Hall Club bought the hall and land from Henry Bruemmer for five dollars, and volunteers have run it since. When a 2018 roof job opened things up, workers found the original cypress shingles still there.

It began as a warehouse before the German community turned it into a gathering place, according to the club's account. The dance is the first Saturday of every month, on a floor that is not a museum piece. That is the reason we put it at number one.

Our ranking was our pick, not a scoreboard, and Anhalt's marked 1879 date is a fair rival for the oldest. If you were ranking, which hall would you put at number one, and what song would you ask the band for first?

What an incredible raise the roof weekend we had! ❤️ From the amazing vendors and talented cook-off competitors to the live music, dancing, sponsors, volunteers, and everyone who came out to support us — THANK YOU for making Raise the Roof a success!

It takes a village to bring an event like this to life, and we are beyond grateful for every person who played a part. We truly could not do this without you!
