D-Day Hero Jim Glennie Dies Aged 100🕊🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

One of Scotland’s last surviving D-Day veterans, Jim Glennie, has died at the age of 100, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of courage, service and dedication.

The Turriff man was just 18 when he landed on the beaches of Normandy with the Gordon Highlanders on 6 June 1944 as part of Operation Overlord, the largest amphibious invasion in history. Amid fierce German resistance, he fought his way inland before being wounded in the arm and captured a week later. He spent months as a prisoner of war at Stalag IV-B, where hunger and hardship became part of daily life until the camp was liberated in 1945.

Speaking previously about his wartime experiences, Mr Glennie said he survived through “sheer luck”, recalling the sight of a fallen soldier as he stepped from his landing craft onto the Normandy beaches.

After the war he returned to Aberdeenshire, worked as a welder and devoted much of his retirement to volunteering at the Gordon Highlanders Museum in Aberdeen, where he gave more than 30 years of service. A portrait honouring his life hangs proudly in the museum, and in 2024 he received the British Empire Medal in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the community.

His family described him as “our hero”, adding: “There is a hole in our life now without him. He is finally getting to be with our mum again.”

Museum chief executive John McLeish paid tribute to a man admired by visitors and volunteers alike, describing Mr Glennie as generous with his time and proud of his regiment. His wit remained undimmed, memorably greeting King Charles during a 2025 museum visit with the words: “Long time no see.” 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🫡🕊⚔️

On this day, 1 July 1916, the Battle of the Somme began.

What followed was 141 days of fighting and one of the most devastating battles of the First World War.

On the first day alone, the British Army suffered 57,470 casualties, including 19,240 who lost their lives. By the battle’s end, more than one million men from all sides had been killed, wounded or gone missing.

Today, we remember those who gave their lives, those who returned carrying the physical and emotional impact of war, and the families and communities forever changed by their sacrifice.

As we mark the anniversary of the Somme, we reflect on the cost of conflict and honour the service of those who served.

Kings Visit - Jedburgh 2 July 2026

Jedburgh will host a VIP visit on Thursday 2 July 2026.

The visit is a special occasion for the town as it welcomes His Majesty King Charles III for the first time. His Majesty’s visit will coincide with the Jethart Callant’s Festival.

Road closures will be in place to facilitate the visit, which will impact on businesses, residents and visitors.The town is expected to be busy throughout the day.

Please find below information about the visit including road closures, parking restrictions and changes to waste collections.

Road Closures
The following roads in Jedburgh will be closed to vehicular traffic on Thursday 2 July 2026:

High Street, from Market Place to Smith’s Wynd will be closed from 8am to 5pm.
Abbey Bridge End, Abbey Place, Market Place, Castlegate, Exchange Street, Canongate – all closed from 9am to 5pm
Alternatives routes:

Castlegate Closure – via B6358, A698 and A68
Exchange Street Closure – via C38, A698 and A68
Access to Coop supermarket will be maintained via Queen St and Smiths Wynd. High Street businesses will be accessible on foot.

Parking
Parking will be prohibited on the following roads from 6pm on Wednesday 1 July to 5pm Thursday 2 July:

Abbey Bridge End, Abbey Place, Market Place, High Street, Castlegate, Exchange Street, Canongate, Deans Close, A68 (from Oxnam Road to Bongate) and Oxnam Road (from A68 to Wildcat Gate).

Car Park closures
The following car parks will be closed between 1am and 5pm on Thursday 2 July:

Murrays Green
The Glebe
Canongate
Limited disabled parking will be available in the Canongate car park with access from 10.30am.

If you have an appointment on Thursday 2 July at Jedburgh Medical Practice, please be mindful of the road closures and car parking. Access to the practice will be available via Queen Street and on foot.

Bus Service
The bus service will operate as normal. A free park and ride shuttle bus, operated by Peter Hoggs of Jedburgh will also run from Jedburgh Woollen Mill to the town , every 15 minutes from 10am to 3pm on Thursday 2 July.

Waste Collections
The following streets in and around Jedburgh will not receive their scheduled waste collection on Thursday, 2 July.

This collection has been rescheduled and will now take place on Sunday, 5 July. Please ensure your bin is presented for collection by 7am on this date.

Please do not present your bin on Thursday, 2 July.
