🎨 Could a guaranteed basic income help keep creativity alive in the Highlands?

A new proposal going before Highland Council could see artists and creatives in the region paid a guaranteed basic income to support their work.

Councillor Michael Gregson says the move could give artists more time to focus on creating, instead of juggling multiple jobs just to get by.
The idea follows a pilot scheme launched in Ireland in 2021, which reportedly found that every €1 invested returned €1.39 to the wider economy.

Supporters say it could boost culture, tourism and the creative industries across the Highlands. Critics are likely to question the cost and how it would be funded.

What do you think? Good investment in the future of Highland culture, or money better spent elsewhere?

Looking good gang

Catriona Sutherland took this photo of three young highland cows on the Applecross Estate near Strathcarron. "They really are teddy bears as long as you watch out for the horns," she said.
