We had a very nice and varied outing on the 27th May with visitors from as far afield as Eastbourne, Ayrshire, Cambridge and even Ware. "The Merry Men" (which includes at least two women it was difficult to assess the one big person in dodgy shorts) kicked us off with a fine selection of rollicking Irish songs. We had Bill and Jenny Harris , our visitors from Eastbourne, performed a lovely set of Americana. Club favourite Pauline Vallance with her harp and coming all the way from Ayrshire gave us a very amusing set including a wry musical comment on Robert Burns. Jeremy Harmer our headline act complete with a folksingers pantechnicon (trolley) with guitars , stands and harmonium in it. He performed a great set of thought provoking song on guitars and the aforesaid harmonium. An excellent evening.

On the 10th June we have as our main act "Awake Mother". Awake Mother are a new duo from the south of England. They are keen to share music from the folk tradition, reigniting old favourites and introducing you to new songs and tales from times gone by. Awake Mother are Minnie Birch and Kathleen P, two award winning, critically acclaimed musicians who have joined together to present something new and special in the folk tradition. Expect to be invited to sing and stomp along one moment and have your heart strings pulled the next. We look forward to performing for (and maybe with) you. Please check them out on Facebook...there's lots of stuff there! Support is as per the poster.
See you then.

Next outing for Four Rivers Folk Club is on Wednesday 27th May, Our headline will be Cambridge performer "Jeremy Harmer".

“Described by one reviewer as a “twenty-first century troubadour” Jeremy Harmer, a member of the Folkhouse Collective, writes and performs songs which describe and celebrate contemporary life as well as composition expressing his love of the world around him. With his lyrical voice and superb musicianship on various instruments Jeremy operates in many musical genre.”

We will have support from Pauline Vallance who is travelling all the way from Scotland to sing and play harp for us (we try to mix and match). Bill and Jenny Harris who travel all the way from Eastbourne and last but by no means least we have local group The Merry Men (including women I have to stress!).

See you all then folkies!

We've had a cancellation for the next coven but I've Instructed the Junkyard Dawg Jugband to gird their loins, sharpen their strings, spit out the gum, go to the toilet and get ready to headline again at The Four Rivers Folk Club on Wednesday 13th May. The poster says it all including who will be the supports ..."no Geoff" ...not your old truss or cricket box!
A Jugband with only one disabled sticker between them! Obviously they won't be asked to assist Taylor Swift on her next tour...maybe Martin Goslow needs our assistance?
See you soon...ages to the gig so plenty of time to find your excuses....just saying...

A very late announcement for this Wednesday's Four River Folk Club. There are actually 5 Rivers if you include The New River which supplies water to London. Anyway here's this weeks line up. Our headline act is Tony Clark and Karen Johnson who make beautiful music together (their phrase not mine...stop that! ). But honestly they really do, with Karen's honeyed voice and Tony's rhythmic sensitive playing on guitar and bouzouki. We can expect a mixture of folk, home-grown and well known sing alongside. In addition to Karen's wonderful vocals Tony sings perfect harmonies..great entertainment. We have support from Why Not?, Peter Crossley and an extended set from Scottish singer Linn Phipps who has a repertoire of songs in English and Scot's Gaelic. If time, I might throw in some with Peter Crossley on fiddle.

On the 23rd April I will be presenting an evening of songs by English Songwriters. Why the 23rd April? Because it is St. George's Day...Why is an Irishman with a Scottish accent putting this on? Because he's not English...go figure!!!
This has ben the most difficult event to control due to some acts confusing USA songwriters as English...I sorted them out and some were very late in delivering their lists. I was only trying to avoid duplication and there were some. I have had to adjust the poster 6 times...no wonder I get frustrated ...please consider the organiser lads and lasses.
We have 9 acts performing 36 songs so will the performers reduce...or better still omit their introductions...Archie has instructions to mute the pa. Although I'm listed as performing I think I may not get a chance to perform as we'll almost certainly overrun the time...I don't mind. Here's the poster I'll schedule up later in the month. pip pip Pat

Next Four Rivers Folk Club on this coming Wednesday the 8th April has as its headline act the very wonderful Jess Brett and she'll be more than adequately supported by even more women!! I know it's all too much but we also have a set from Peggy Birmingham (guitar/vocals) and Rowan Gibbons (banjo /vocals). I've also permitted a couple of blokes to perform that evening, Bill Tarran , guitar/vocals and Peter Hart one of our local poets who specialises in things political with more than a touch of humour. I'll drag a few songs out too.
