The festival was created in 2021 to celebrate documentary in all its forms, from social issues to culture to the environment and nature, or just great real stories, with community collaborations at the heart of programming.

The Land of Common Disgrace, Vol. 2

When making a documentary becomes a collective act

Join Palestinian artist and filmmaker at SD Projects for a live, collaborative project exploring protest, policing and political activism in Britain.

Help build the set, take part in a collective reading or drop in to watch the documentary being filmed. No experience needed, and you can get involved as much or as little as you like.

Deep in the Welsh Valleys, Juan Lozano, an Elvis impersonator, underwent numerous surgeries to resemble his idol, leaving him nearly blind. Now he’s retiring his Elvis show and stepping out of The King’s shadow to find his own voice.

We’re taking to the streets!✨😁

For the first time ever, Folkestone Documentary Festival is bringing you a procession.

And consider this your invite to be a part of it!

Join us for The Archivist on Saturday 24 October - a free, family-friendly afternoon of making, dressing up and imagination.

Drop into Folkestone Museum anytime from 1pm to create your own mask or other bits of costume, then join us at 3pm for a colourful procession through Folkestone with Morris dancers and fantastical creatures.

You’re more than welcome to bring your own costume also!

We are honoured to announce that our closing secret film will be NAZA, directed by and Rachel Szor.

One of the most important documentaries of this year or any year, the film is shot at night on the rooftops of Tel Aviv, revealing in detail the systems behind Israel’s calculated mass killing of Palestinian civilians in Gaza.

“We made this film out of a sense of obligation to use our position as Israelis to examine the systems behind the mass killing of Palestinian civilians for which our country is responsible. While filming over the past three years, we found ourselves asking the very questions that were asked by our grandparents’ generation and throughout the 20th century: how does one group of people allow the total dehumanisation of another? What do the inner workings of such a system look like?”

The Archivist

David “Doc” Rowe has spent 60 years documenting Britain’s folk traditions. Before the screening, join us for a free, drop-in mask-making workshop at Folkestone Museum from 1pm, followed by a folk procession through the town centre from 3pm, featuring Morris dancers and fantastical creatures. Make your own mask, crown or headdress and join in!
No booking needed. All ages welcome.

A Welsh folk story about a cottage built in one night, remembered through the eyes of two women and the children who grew up hearing their story.

Rob Beaton has been weaving tartan and tweed in the Scottish Borders since he was 14. Now 84, he is Scotland’s oldest and longest-serving mill worker, still working on 100-year-old traditional looms.
