Two weeks until 'I Am Not My Hair' arrives at Lyra and we are counting down the days!

A joyful dance-theatre work created by Marie-Gabrielle Koumenda, for Black and Mixed-Race girls aged 8-12 years old. Drawing on lived experiences, and through vibrant movement, music and storytelling, the piece celebrates Black hair and
creates a space where identity and individuality are honoured. Marie-Gabrielle hopes to give young audiences the chance to see themselves reflected on stage, while inviting wider audiences to engage with the richness and meaning of Black hair culture.

Happy Halloween to all you Trick or Treat-ers roaming the streets tonight (and to everyone staying at home on Door Duty to hand out sweets!) We're still haunted by the terrifying Gorbals Vampire that roamed Lyra's stage at the Bright & Wild Festival 2023.
Based on a true story from 1950s Glasgow, Daniel Gough and Lyra's Thursday Young Artists rediscovered the story of the hundreds of school children who took their streets armed with stakes and crosses to hunt down the 7 foot blood sucker.

We are so excited to have our Young Artists back for what will be another fun-filled term! Here is what they got up to last week (and some of this week too...):
Our teenage Makers group have been developing their balloon scene further, under the direction of Jo Sharp.
The Scamps had great fun playing the snake game - one of their favourites!🐍 They also love their lunch time in Lyra's office to chill before the session begins.
This week, the Thursday Young Artists were working with Florence Logan to keep making their 'Brave New Worlds' show!
The Wednesday Young Artists also had fun this week working with Jo Sharp.

We'll meet at Lyra for free hot chocolates first, and then we'll make our way up to Sandys Community Centre together for the annual Community Campfire event. Get ready for an evening of free food by Edinburgh Food Social, crackling fire pits and fun entertainment, all whilst catching up with your local Craigmillar community. ✨

Say hello to Noa Ferder who has been selected by Lyra's Thursday Young Artists to co-create a brand new show with them over the next few months.

What was the winning idea that captured the Thursday Young Artists' vivid imaginations?
What if every idea had already been thought, every invention had already been invented, and there was nothing new left to create? With Earth reaching 100% completion and nowhere left for it to go, Noa and the Young Artists will take matters into their own hands and begin creating entirely new worlds. Together, they’ll experiment with the rules of these worlds, how they look and sound, and what it might be like to live in them. These ideas will grow into a performance where audiences are invited to travel through the worlds the Young Artists have created at Bright & Wild 2027.

Noa Ferder (she/her) is an interdisciplinary artist based in Glasgow, working across performance, visual art, film and installation. She creates experimental environments that mess with how things are supposed to look, feel or behave to uncover what might be hiding underneath. We're so excited to welcome them to Lyra this season!

Are you interested in developing your practice and working creatively with babies, young children and families?

Catherine Wheels Theatre Company Starcatchers and Lyra are offering two bespoke traineeships to support artists to develop their skills, grow their practice and create inspiring experiences for young audiences.

This opportunity is for people who may face barriers to the industry, specifically from backgrounds typically under-represented in arts for young audiences.

We are open to applications from all roles within the arts. You can apply as a trainee artist, facilitator, designer, stage manager, technician etc, as long as you have an interest in work for babies, children and young people.

Each of these shows was chosen by Lyra’s Culture Crew of local teens and all tickets are free for local families. So what are you waiting for?

Here is this week's weekly round-up of what all of our groups have been up to! There seemed to be a running theme of machine-making this week...🚜👀
Our Thursday Young Artists had fun devising short scenes using props under the studio lights (images 1-5).
The Outline invented their own human machine!
The Wednesday Young Artists all sang a song with Jo in the studio, and they also made their own human-powered machine in the theatre!
The teens had another fantastic session with Youth Theatre Arts Scotland.
And finally, the Scamps also made their machines with the help of Youth Arts Worker Fiona!
