Chances are you have read one of his typefaces today.

Luc(as) de Groot designed Calibri and Consolas for Microsoft and the Thesis superfamily. During Berlin Design Nights 2026, he and his team opened the LucasFonts studio in Schöneberg and showed what usually stays on screen: first sketches, curve refinement, hinting, and finally letters as three-dimensional objects you could walk around.

Form first, then adventure. Or the other way round?

Next in our recap series: during BDW 2026, Unique Factory Berlin on Potsdamer Straße showed a curated selection of works by Swedish designer Monica Förster. Pieces from many different collaborations stood side by side, from refined everyday objects to more expressive forms, and made her process visible: how an idea becomes a finished object. Monica Förster was also among our speakers in 2026.

100% recyclable, and more than a century in the making.

As part of BDW 2026, opened its new Brand Space under the railway arches at Savignyplatz. The family business from Ahlen in Westphalia has made steel enamel for four generations, one of the few bathroom materials that can be fully recycled. On show: the e15 × KALDEWEI collection by Stefan Diez, solid oak and leather next to enamel, plus work by Christina Celestino, Anke Salomon and Werner Aisslinger, in a space shared with Berlin lighting company Grau.

The most underrated room in your home? The entryway.

Next in our recap series: at BDW 2026, 20 designers from FH Potsdam took the threshold seriously. Their "Transit Objects" were made for the place where guests are welcomed and sent off, the space between public and private life. The exhibition "Zwischen Tür und Angel" (German for "in passing") ran at feldfünf in Kreuzberg, a short walk from our festival centre Die Macherei.

What if the most political thing a designer can do is to stop deciding for others?⁠

Felix Kosok raised this question at The Berlin Format 2026, describing design as distributed creative agency: a practice that creates the conditions in which people can imagine and shape a shared world themselves.⁠

Looking towards 2027, the question becomes harder. With software, AI and generative tools, many decisions are made before anyone starts designing. Who writes that code? And who gets to change it?⁠

This is where What’s Your Code_? begins: with the code behind every design, both attitude and tools. We want to take up these questions at the Berliner Format 2027. Where would you begin?⁠

Looks like porcelain. Comes out of a 3D printer.

During Berlin Design Nights 2026, Berlin manufactory Polyluma opened its workshop in Mitte. Visitors watched lamps being printed from a self-developed biopolymer of corn starch, chalk and natural materials, each piece made to order and finished by hand, and got a first look at new designs.

That is what a Design Nights evening can be: your workshop, open doors, people who want to see how things are made. Registration for 2027 is open, early bird until 31 December.

Print your message. Ten letters, maximum.

During Berlin Design Nights 2026, Erik Spiekermann, one of the world's most influential typographers, invited visitors to his press at Galerie P98a / Hacking Gutenberg on Potsdamer Straße. The wooden letters were so big that the press held ten at most. Fewer letters, stronger message: a rule that works well beyond the print shop.

What makes a city feel like home?

That was the question Marwan Zabanoot brought to The Berlin Format 2026. Working between architecture, urban planning and research, he focuses on heritage cities in the Arab world. With Muscat and Muttrah as case studies, he showed how digital twins can test climate-responsive interventions in historic urban fabric before anything is built. Tradition, run through a simulation first.

The Berliner Format 2027 is taking shape, more soon.

What does your work run on? Materials, craft, code, conviction?

Berlin Design Week 2027 asks exactly that: What’s Your Code_? From 22 to 27 April, studios, brands, universities and designers show their answer across the city, in three formats:

Satellites: your own exhibition, showroom, talk or workshop, in your space or in one we find with you.
Berlin Design Nights: on the evening of 22 April, doors open across Berlin, with curated tours by neighbourhood and theme.
Design Pool: fair and market in one on 24 and 25 April, for small series, editions and direct encounters.

In the same week, the iF Design Award Night and the iF Design Trend Conference bring the international design scene to Berlin.

Registration is open, early bird until 31 December.
