Congratulations are in order! Several Berlinale films celebrated major success at the Deutscher Filmpreis (German Film Awards) – earning numerous nominations and taking home some of the coveted Lolas.

Irene Höfer and Sabine Lidl took home the Golden Lola for Best Documentary for “Siri Hustvedt - Dance Around the Self”. The film also received a nomination for Best Editing (Maxine Goedicke).

Berlinale Golden Bear winner “Yellow Letters” continued its success, winning the Silver Lola for Best Feature Film (Ingo Fliess) as well as Best Film Score (Marvin Miller).
The film was also nominated for Best Director (İlker Çatak), Best Screenplay (İlker Çatak, Ayda Meryem Çatak, Enis Köstepen), Best Leading Actress (Özgü Namal), Best Leading Actor (Tansu Biçer), Best Cinematography (Judith Kaufmann), Best Editing (Gesa Jäger) and Best Production Design (Zazie Knepper).

“Circus Boy” (produced by Katharina Bergfeld, Martin Heisler) took home the Golden Lola for Best Children’s Film.

We celebrate two remarkable Berlinale World Cinema Fund-supported films recognised at this year’s Cannes Film Festival:

Marie-Clémentine Dusabejambo’s “Ben’Imana” made history as the first Rwandan film selected for the festival’s Official Selection and went on to win the Caméra d’Or. The film also won the FIPRESCI International Critics’ Prize and is the first film to receive the TUI Care Foundation Award of the World Cinema Fund, introduced in 2024.

Abinash Bikram Shah’s “Elephants in the Fog”, the first Nepali film ever selected for Un Certain Regard, received the Jury Prize in the section.

Both directors are Berlinale Talents alumni. Congratulations to the filmmakers, producers and entire creative teams behind these extraordinary works. We are proud that the WCF could support these bold cinematic voices!

We also celebrate the success of many more Berlinale Talents alumni at Cannes, among them Katrin Pors and Jussi Rantamäki, co-producers of this year’s Palme d’Or winner “Fjord”.

Berlinale Under the Starry Sky! ✨🐻
From June 21 to 24, Summer Berlinale at radioeins Freiluftkino Friedrichshain invites audiences to discover selected highlights of the 76th Berlinale before their theatrical release.

“The Summer Berlinale brings the magic of the festival to summer nights under Berlin’s starry sky. For a few days, the Freiluftkino Friedrichshain becomes a vibrant meeting place for audiences to get a taste of the Berlinale in a unique open-air atmosphere,” says Berlinale Director Tricia Tuttle.

South Africa will be the European Film Market’s “Country in Focus” at the Berlinale in 2027!

With internationally acclaimed filmmakers, diverse storytelling traditions, world-class crews, and competitive production infrastructure, the country has established itself as a key partner for the international film and media industry.

South African cinema has long been part of the Berlinale’s history. Over the past decades, South African filmmakers and productions have regularly been represented across the festival and market programmes, reflecting the country’s creative diversity and international resonance. In 2005, “U-Carmen eKhayelitsha” by Mark Dornford-May became the first South African film to win the Berlinale’s Golden Bear, marking a milestone in the festival’s relationship with the country’s cinema.
