Today is International Literacy Day!

Literacy is not just an academic skill - it is a human right that shapes the course of our entire life.

Literacy is a foundation for people to acquire broader knowledge, skills, values, attitudes, and behaviours to foster a culture of lasting peace based on respect for equality and non-discrimination, the rule of law, solidarity, justice, diversity, and tolerance and to build harmonious relations with oneself, other people and the planet.

Great progress has been made in literacy with more than 88 per cent of the world’s adult population knowing how to read and write today, compared to 65 per cent in 1975 (UNESCO).

However, an estimated 739 million youth and adults worldwide still lack basic literacy skills, and 4 in 10 children in low- and middle-income countries are not reaching minimum proficiency in reading.

The Manitoba Library Association is deeply saddened by the loss of a cherished community member, librarian, and advocate, Cathy Ching, whose impact on libraries across Manitoba was profound.

Cathy served South Central Regional Library for 20 years - the last 8 as Director - with compassion and a strong belief in the value of public libraries.

Cathy spoke about the importance of intellectual freedom, and remained positive in the face of censorship attempts. Her leadership during the book‑banning fight inspired not only her own community, but the entire province with her determination to uphold the fundamental right to freedom of expression and the unrestricted pursuit of knowledge for all individuals.

In recognition of their passion and advocacy work, Cathy and her team became the inaugural recipients of the MLA Human Rights Award.

Last year, Cathy brought Library Connections to Manitou and ensured her entire staff could attend. She loved shared learning, and the sense of community that libraries create. She loved her job, loved her team, and loved the place she called home.

She will be remembered as a tireless advocate, a mentor, and a cherished member of our community. MLA is thinking of Cathy's family and friends during this difficult time. 🕊️ 💙
