Join us for the opening night of the 15th annual Architecture + Design Film Festival (A+DFF) with the World Premiere of the Winnipeg-made film, Meeting a Moment – the Art of Social Architecture, as the opening night screening.

Written and directed by Winnipeg filmmaker Danielle Sturk, the 44-minute documentary invites architects, historians, social housing advocates and citizens to reflect on the creation of affordable housing in Winnipeg, and why it is about more than simply architecture and design. The film was inspired by the WAF book, 'Green Blankstein Russell and Associates', written by Jeffrey Thorsteinson and Brennan Smith, who both appear in the film. There will be a post-screening Q+A with the director and participants in the film.

Meeting a Moment – the Art of Social Architecture, will screen at a new venue for A+DFF – The Gas Station Arts Centre Theatre, along with our other films at local venues.

Please see adff.ca for the full A+DFF programme.

Meeting a Moment-the art of social architecture
Directed by Danielle Sturk

World premiere
April 15, 7 pm, Gas Station Arts Centre

Shot in a dynamic, hand-held style, the 44-minute documentary film Meeting a Moment – the Art of Social Architecture invites architects, historians, social housing advocates and citizens to reflect on the creation of affordable housing in Winnipeg and why it is about more than simply architecture and design.

Beginning with a look back at the concept for an innovative, large-scale affordable rental housing development designed by the architecture firm Green, Blankstein, Russell in the midst of the Great Depression, to Willow Park Housing Co-operative—Canada’s first permanent housing co-op for families—to the present day revisioning of the iconic Hudson’s Bay Company building as Wehwehneh Bahgahkinahgohn, the film challenges our collective social conscience on what it takes to truly create a home and a community.

The film is written and directed by Danielle Sturk, a multidisciplinary artist known for her emotionally resonant, visually striking work.
