The first Legacy Athletes from Sagkeeng Anicinabe Nation we’re spotlighting are The Front Runners.

The Front Runners are a group of 10 Indigenous athletes, including Dave Courchene Jr. from Sagkeeng, who were torchbearers at the 1967 Pan American Games in Winnipeg. Despite successfully running the torch 800 km from St. Paul, Minnesota, to Winnipeg, they were not allowed to carry the torch into the stadium. Instead, a non-Indigenous runner carried the torch, and the Front Runners were sent to a nearby restaurant to watch the opening ceremonies. This incident highlighted the discrimination faced by Indigenous athletes in the past, and it has become a symbol of injustice and the systemic racism that Indigenous peoples have experienced.

In 1999, when the Pan American Games returned to Winnipeg, Dave Courchene Jr. and the surviving Front Runners were finally able to carry the torch into the stadium. (cbc.ca)

The 2025 Manitoba Indigenous Summer Games (MISG) is excited to bring a level of competition and sportsmanship to facilitate our athletes to this level of excellence. Week 2 of the MISG is kicking off at Sagkeeng Anicinabe Nation on August 17 – 23, 2025.
