🎶 Stories, discoveries, and a musical celebration—here’s what’s happening on Saturday at Olaf Kopvillem 100!

Join VEMU on November 7 in person + via livestream for a day of archival discoveries, personal memories, and fresh perspectives on Estonian musical heritage. Take a look at Saturday’s conference schedule and plan your day with us!

The evening brings a special celebration of Olaf and Peeter Kopvillem’s music. Alongside Olaf’s centennial, 2026 marks ten years since his son, musician and journalist Peeter Kopvillem, passed away.

Following memorial concerts for Peeter at KUMU in 2016 and Viru Folk Festival in 2018, the celebration continues in Toronto. Hear both musicians’ witty, inventive songs performed by people who shared the stage with Peeter, including Eric Soostar, Tõnis Tõllasepp, Aarne Tork, Peeter’s daughters Leiki and Keila Kopvillem, and surprise guests.

Come hear the stories behind the songs and performances—and you might even be invited to sing along!

🎶 Friday’s concert lineup just got bigger! Tiiu Strutt (Land Heart Song , Canada) joins the artists taking the stage.

A singer-songwriter and educator, Tiiu creates nature-inspired music through her project Land Heart Song. With Estonian roots on her father’s side, she has been reconnecting with her heritage through traditional Estonian songs. Since 2003, Tiiu has successfully recorded four albums, toured nationally, and received national and college radio play, including being a featured artist on CBC Radio’s “Canada Live” program. As Land Heart Song, Tiiu is an award-winning artist, performing across Ontario at libraries, schools and festivals, including Northern Lights Festival Boreal (Sudbury), SpringTide Music Festival (Uxbridge) and Restoration Festival (Burks Falls).

For many Estonians in Canada, his songs were part of growing up—a familiar voice connecting people through music, humour, and a shared sense of home.

Born in Kiviõli, Estonia, in 1926, Olaf left his homeland during the Second World War and ultimately settled in Canada. He studied chemistry while also pursuing music and devoting himself to the Estonian community—leading Estonian choirs in Montreal and Hamilton, and becoming known for his humorous songs and adaptations.

A beloved Estonian-Canadian musician and songwriter, Olaf Kopvillem helped shape the musical life of the Estonian diaspora. This year marks the 100th anniversary of his birth, offering a chance to revisit his legacy—and introduce his music to new listeners.

On November 6–7, join VEMU for Olaf Kopvillem 100: Saatis neid laul / Accompanied by Song, a weekend of conversations, discoveries, and musical celebrations.

Mis peitub kingakarbis, mille omanik arvab, et seal pole midagi erilist? Võib-olla killuke seni kuulmata Eesti muusikalugu. EstoCastis on külas muusik ja laulukirjutaja Vaiko Eplik (Vaiko Epliku Muusika) ning ajaloolane ja muusikauurija, Vabamu direktor Maarja Merivoo-Parro, kelle koostatud kogumiku „Esto-muusika“ ilmumisest on möödunud kümme aastat. Räägime albumi sünnist, üllatavatest leidudest ja sellest, kuidas väliseesti muusika on jõudnud tagasi kodumaa kuulajateni. Vestlus juhatab sisse ka novembri alguses Torontos toimuva Olaf Kopvillemi 100. sünniaastapäevale pühendatud konverentsi, kuhu mõlemad külalised on tulemas.

Vestluses uurime:
🎶 kuidas sai tundidepikkustest kuulamisõhtutest kogumik „Esto-muusika“ ning miks seda siiani voogedastusplatvormidelt ei leia;

Two dead-straight faces and a near-dead instrument, making zombie folk that slaps! That's Puuluup in a nutshell.

With joy we welcome the duo back on the Estonian Music Week festival stage. They bring the perfect mix of creativity, humour and gloriously awkard choreography to every performance.

Puuluup calls their own sound "zombie folk" — routing the talharpa's horsehair strings through loopers and effects pedals until the resurrected instrument sounds like nothing else in folk music. One critic put it well: if Wes Anderson invented an Estonian folk duo, it would be Puuluup.

The duo has played in over 40 countries, from WOMAD to Sziget to Colours of Ostrava, and even into the Eurovision Song Contest. And next May, they are back in Toronto!

Tallinn Music Week welcomes musicians from all around the world across various genres and backgrounds – from solo acts and ensembles to rap crews and contemporary classical performers, from experimentalists to pop acts, and from electronic producers to jazz and folk players.

The line-up of about 180 artists, selected from applications, is presented across various venues in Tallinn to an audience of around 20,000 and over 1,000 industry professionals on 8 – 11 April 2027.
