Live Performace: Gaskačázis
📆 Friday, June 5, 2026 | 2:00 PM
📍 TIFF Lightbox, Gallery

Gaskačázis is a live audiovisual performance by composer and musician Markus Johnsen Thonhaugen, known as iDJa, and visual artist Eili Bråstad.

The title is a Northern Sámi word that refers to the space beneath the surface. This idea is at the centre of the work. Through sound, image and live improvisation, Gaskačázis invites the audience into hidden layers of the landscape, into what is usually too small, too quiet or too overlooked to notice.

Using contact microphones, field recordings, joik, electronic sound and microscopic imagery, the artists create a meditative encounter between the organic and the technological. Sounds and images that are normally invisible or inaudible are brought forward, opening up another way of sensing the land.

The work also reflects on a landscape under pressure. Across Sápmi, nature and ecosystems are changing because of human intervention. Gaskačázis does not approach this through direct explanation, but through attention, presence and sensory detail. It asks the audience to slow down, listen closely and notice what is changing around us.

The performance unfolds live. Sound and image respond to each other in real time, creating an expression that is constantly moving. Joik ties the work together, improvised in the moment as a response to what emerges between sound, image, place and audience.

The project is supported by the Sámi Parliament of Norway, Arts Council Norway, and Nordland County Council.
