Friends of Allan Gardens 🪱🐛🌱

BIRDIE GERHL is a multidisciplinary artist based in Hamilton, ON. Her artistic practice straddles textiles, video, drawing, poetry, and zines, often combining them in installations and performances. Birdie furthers the q***r and disability aesthetics of her work by using these mediums as interconnected methods of creating and troubling accessibility within her practice.

Since graduating from the Visual and Creative Arts program at Sheridan College in 2017, Birdie has mounted four solo exhibitions, in addition to multiple residencies and group shows, and was awarded the City of Hamilton Creator Award in 2024. Birdie's on-going zine series "System of Girls" is full of analogue cut ‘n’ paste collage and earnest, hand-lettered poetry connecting land, femme, kink, labour, friendship, and longing across generations and non-linear time.

Using the structures of music as mediums in her multimedia universe, Juliana Huxtable is a DJ and musician singular in her approach. Where her visual art and poetry navigate the complexification of desire in a life increasingly mediated by technology, her music utilizes the sounds of technology itself to construct parallel realities to be inhabited and embodied in rhythm and harmonic tableaux. Her sets skillfully deploy the notion of sampling and re-blogging as DJ strategies, ecstatically mixing an array of influences that frolic at the boundary of genre- intuition and experimentation. At once an assertion of freedom and an ode to the evolutionary structure of electronic music subcultures, she aspires to the sublime in what can often only be described as witchcraft behind the decks; seance from the stage.

Alanna Stuart (pka PYNE) is Caribbean-Canadian music artist-scholar. In sound and scholarship, she is in the thick of what she dubs a ‘Femmehall’ praxis: exploring the libratory possibilities of a feminine approach to dancehall reggae music production. As producer-vocalist PYNE, Stuart has collaborated with Beverly Glenn Copeland, Bambii, U.S. Girls, Equiknoxx Music, Jeremy Dutcher, and Junior Boys. Outside of the studio, Alanna Stuart is a SSHRC Doctoral Fellow and Gender Studies PhD student at Queen’s University. Her research can be read in Socio-Economic Review, Work, Employment & Society, and the tekhnē journal.

ALL FLOWERS MAHJONG
Founded in 2024, All Flowers Mahjong is an inclusive, grassroots social club in Toronto’s Chinatown where people gather to play, learn, and share a love of mahjong. Rooted in the East and Southeast Asian diaspora, we create a third space that brings together generations across cultures.

As a feminist club, we recognize that culture and community are shaped by the realities of people’s lives. From Turtle Island to Palestine, we stand against colonialism, imperialism, racial capitalism, displacement, and genocide, and move in solidarity with struggles for liberation.

We believe strong communities are built locally, one table at a time. All levels are welcome.

Christina Dovolis is an interdisciplinary filmmaker and geographer, often working with cutting-edge technologies to explore how our built environments shape community and identity. Hailing from the Midwest, Christina draws inspiration from themes of girlhood and gossip, religious mythologies, and the complexities of urban development. As an educator, Christina is committed to making new media programs more accessible to the public, particularly focusing on empowering women and marginalized groups. She has achieved acclaim for her projects, with presentations at Museum of the Moving Image, SXSW Sydney, Nuit Blanche, Aga Khan, Calgary Underground Film Festival, and more.

Tara Rose Morris is a mixed desi new media artist, creative technologist, and educator based between Toronto and Montreal. Her installations, films, and performances explore how technology intervenes in our relationship with ourselves, each other, and our environment. Morris has shown works with arts institutions across North America including Gray Area, InterAccess, SXSW, VIFF, Nuit Blanche, and MAPP. She has a BA in Media Studies from Pomona College and a MSc in Fiction & Entertainment from SCIArc.
