It’s with great sadness that we, the Argyle BIA and the East London Optimists, share that East London Canada Day will not be having a fireworks show this year.
Even with generous community support, sponsorships, and countless hours of work, the gap was simply too large to close. For almost 20 years, our firework costs stayed fairly consistent but in the last few years, that amount has steadily amounted to shorter and shorter shows. At the same time, our federal funding - which normally helps cover a significant portion of the display - was cut by nearly half.
We know how much the fireworks mean to East London. For many families, newcomers, and long‑time residents it’s a display that brings us together and really brings home the celebration. We understand that this news will be disappointing to many. Please know that we share that disappointment, and that we tried every possible avenue before arriving at this decision.
But East London always finds a way to come together. To keep the day special, we’re adding extra daytime programming - more activities, more entertainment, and more ways to celebrate as a community. If we can’t end the night with fireworks, we’ll make the rest of the day shine even brighter.
We hope you’ll join us and continue to support the event as we work to make this Canada Day shine in a different way. This event is built with love for East London, and that remains whether or not there are fireworks.🩵
