Bold, Narrative driven, femme-led independent theatre. 🐇

White Rabbit Theatre Ensemble was founded in 2011 by Artistic Director Lisa Smith, with a focus on the production of new, dynamic work for theatre. With a passion for creative collaboration, White Rabbit aims to explore the full spectrum of possibilities laid before us in this magical world of theatre. WRTE is a platform for professional and emerging artists to explore new horizons, to hone their skills and present compelling work to audiences. WRTE is committed to the growth, support and enrichment of the arts on the beautiful Gold Coast, engaging the wide array of talented artists that call it home, and inviting creatives from other locales to engage with us, our work and our city.

Reflecting on the whirlwind that was our premiere season of AWAKE at Bleach Festival 2026, and feel we simply must do a gushing appreciation post for our incredible collaborator, musical director and precious friend Victoria Falconer 🪗

Vicky came on board in late 2023 to bring her very particular brand of magic to this piece. Quite simply, it could not and would not (nay - SHOULD NOT!) be without her.

Many of you know her genius, and her stellar reputation is well deserved. Hard working, insightful, meticulous, fiercely intelligent and filled with so much mischief, we are beyond grateful and oh so delighted to have had the chance to watch her weave her magic throughout AWAKE. From arrangement to performance to heart wrenching original composition, there is really nothing you can’t do - and you do it all so beautifully.
More soon please, Ms Falconer. You are a true gem. We adore you.

Looking back on an epic premiere season of AWAKE at Bleach Festival 2026 with so much gratitude and so much joy.

To all of our audiences who came, shared stories, songs, tears and laughs with us - and oh so many sandwiches - we see you, we thank you and we raise a glass to you 🥃

This work would not have come to life without the incredible support of Felix Preval, Experience Gold Coast Arts Fund, Home of the Arts, Rach and BLEACH Festival. The impact of your faith and trust in programming a brand new (local!) work - sight unseen - cannot be underestimated. We are so grateful and hope we made you very proud.

And finally, the biggest thank you to our extraordinary team Valerie Bader, Alec Steedman, Victoria Falconer, ᑕᗩᗷᗩᖇET ᑕOᗰEᗪIᗩᑎ: ᒍOᕼᗩᑎᑎᗩ ᒪYOᑎ, Jarrad Payne, and Freddy. Jarrad Paynemasters of your crafts, and we are so lucky you chose to make your magic with and alongside us.

Friends and audiences - see you for a wh***ey and another song again very soon. There’s so much more to come. 🩵

We’ve had such a wonderful three days frolicking around APAX in sunny Meanjin! So many incredible artists showcasing important and inspiring work.

As a team of two attending events like this is impossible without support.

Earlier this year we were honoured to be the recipients of the Tony Gould Award at the Matilda Awards, which included prize money. This week, we were able to put these monies towards us both attending this year’s APAX in Meanjin/ Brisbane for invaluable professional development, learning, amazing connections and networking opportunities. Special thanks to the Actors & Entertainers Benevolent Fund for making this possible for us in 2026.

A week on from the fabulous Matilda Awards (and multiple moments of pinching ourselves!) we wanted to share the lovely news that we were the very proud recipients of the Actors & Entertainers Benevolent Fund’s 2025 Tony Gould Award.

The Tony Gould Award recognises an independent Arts Company / Collective that has left a positive impact on the Queensland performing arts sector through its curation, programming, or development.

We are so honored to have been nominated for this award (and to whoever did this, we thank you!) and to be the recipient was such an unexpected privilege and delight!

A massive thank you to all our art angels, including
City of Gold Coast
Experience Gold Coast
DARTS network
Our marvellous committee of advisors (to be introduced officially soon!)
Our incredible artist collaborators
Our wonderful mentors
And our amazing parents, families and friends.

We love what we do and we are honoured to share this award with you all - there is no theatre without you.
