Canberra is one of the few designed national capital cities in the world and the local Ngunnawal People’s culture of invention has been in motion for more than 75,000 years. Walter and Marion Griffin’s visionary design a century ago, iconic experimental modernist architecture of the 1950s and 60s, and contemporary and sustainable design developments today, are some of the many ways that Canberra has been – and will always be – a living design laboratory. From 2-20 November 2022, DESIGN Canberra will experiment with new ideas and expand the most successful programs into new directions in the 2022 festival. Over 200 events, exhibitions, talks, tours, activations, markets, collaborations, artist studios and open homes will once again transform the nation’s capital into a new platform for the best in design. The festival, now in its 8th year, is for all interests and ages and most events are free.

MEET THE MAKER | Meet Harriet Schwarzrock Harriet Schwarzrock, the maker behind Delightly, an exhibition at Canberra Glassworks Canberra Glassworks as part of the 2026 Craft + Design Canberra Festival. ⁠
ABOUT DELIGHTLY
5 November – 25 November 2026 at Canberra Glassworks Canberra Glassworks
Delightly is an act of dissent against the disappearance of scientific glassblowing. This rare and endangered craft skill risks being lost as scientific glass fabricators retire and few makers remain who can fabricate borosilicate glassware for experimental apparatus. Created by artist Harriet Schwarzrock, this exhibition reclaims that knowledge through sculptural experimentation, transforming scientific methods into objects of wonder and delight.

NEST | Design for the Displaced Future is a major public art commission for the 2026 Craft + Design Canberra Festival, responding to the theme of Dissent. Located in Civic Square, the temporary public art installation brings together sculptural works exploring the universal instinct to nest and belong in a changing world.

Revitrification transforms discarded architectural waste glass into sculptural installations at the Botanic Gardens, in the process researching circular methodologies that give new value to landfill-bound materials.

In dissent against the decline of the Murray Cod, Tuggeranong Arts Centre invites you to join collaborative community weaving sessions, using natural fibre and recycled materials to complete a large scale textile sculpture.
