An industrial maritime line handling competition can be a valuable training and development opportunity for professionals working in the maritime industry. Here are a few potential benefits of such a competition:

1. Improved skills and knowledge: Line handling competitions can provide an opportunity for professionals to practice and hone their line handling skills in a safe and controlled environment. This can help them develop a deeper understanding of proper techniques and best practices, which can ultimately improve safety on the job.

2. Enhanced teamwork: Line handling competitions often require teams of individuals to work together to complete tasks. This can help participants develop communication skills and strengthen teamwork, which can be essential in the maritime industry where safety often depends on effective collaboration.

3. Increased confidence: Participating in a line handling competition can help professionals build confidence in their abilities and feel more prepared to handle real-world challenges. This can be especially important for those who are new to the industry or who are looking to expand their skillset.

4. Improved safety culture: A line handling competition can help reinforce the importance of safety in the workplace and foster a culture of continuous improvement and learning. This can ultimately lead to a safer and more efficient working environment. Overall, an industrial maritime line handling competition can be a valuable tool for improving skills, teamwork, and safety in the maritime industry. It can provide a fun and engaging way for professionals to learn and grow, while also helping to ensure that they are prepared to handle the challenges they may encounter on the job. Maritime Throwdown made the front page! Proud to see MTD co-owner John McDermott pictured with students in the La Crosse Tribune.
Shoutout to our partner We Work the Waterways and J.F. Brennan Company for helping students connect with the people and careers that keep our waterways working. Getting the next generation involved starts with giving them a chance to see what this industry has to offer. ⚓

Over one hundred students from high schools in the La Crosse area gathered at Western Technical College to learn about jobs in the maritime industry. ⤵️ Find a link to the story in the comments.

Maritime Throwdown has put a line in some pretty cool hands over the years!

In no particular order: company CEOs, astronaut —who’s walked outside the International Space Station—HealthWorks Medical, LLC nurses, our great friend Freddy Stark, who we miss dearly, and now Texas A&M’s 12th Man, Cullen Gillaspia . 👍

Different backgrounds. Same line. Everybody gets a chance to see what our mariners do for a living.

Who should we add to the list next? Tag somebody you’d like to see throw down! 👇

When Maritime Throwdown shows up at a festival, we put a line in your hands and invite you into the action.

Kids, parents, grandparents—people of all ages get to try something new, cheer each other on, and build core memories together. That first catch and the smile that follows can spark an interest in an industry they knew little about.

Growing our maritime workforce starts long before a job application. It starts with a connection, a conversation, and a chance to say, “I could do this.”

A recruiting tent and a sign can tell you about the work. MTD lets you get your hands on it.

Recruit. Train. Retain.
It starts with action.

10/19/2026

Maritime Throwdown had the lines flying and the crowd cheering at the Maritime Museum Louisiana/Wooden Boat Festival this past! ⚓

Big thanks to Florida Marine Transporters, LLC(FMT), main sponsor for the weekend, and our partners We Work the Waterways for being there with us!

From first-time throws to experienced mariners showing their skills, we brought the community into the action.
That’s workforce development our way—hands-on experience, good conversations, and a chance to see what a career on the water can offer.

An event celebrating wooden boat traditions is a fitting place to introduce the next generation to our industry.

Thanks to everyone who took a throw, cheered someone on, or stopped by. We’re looking forward to next year and growing with this event!

Recruit. Train. Retain.
