Abel Sanchez, born and raised in San Francisco, was given his first guitar as a Christmas present by his grandmother at age 10. Music has been a passion and important part of his life since. By age 15, Abel became involved in music as a bandleader, guitarist, and songwriter. Abel still leads his band Abel and the Prophets more than 50 years later.

In the late 60s, his band became one of San Francisco’s premier house bands opening many of the Bay Area hot spot nightclubs and packing the house with their soulful sounds. As a result of growing up in the southeast area of San Francisco, Soul music, as it was called back in the day, was the DNA of his music. Ultimately, the diversity of all the sounds and music happening in the bay area during those times, became reflected in his works.

Andres Alegria is a producer of documentary films and a television editor. He began his career as a producer of news, documentary and cultural radio programming. He produced and hosted programming for 10 years for public radio including KPFA, Pacifica Radio and NPR, focusing on Chicano and Latin American affairs, including the struggle of the farm workers for decent working conditions and the right to organize.

Since then Andres has been a television editor and producer for over 30 years with credits that include national and local news, documentaries and nationally syndicated programs for all the major networks both commercial and public. He has co-produced three internationally distributed independent documentaries with the Freedom Archives in San Francisco. In addition to producing independent films and videos, he is currently V.P. of Post and Operations for Hoff Productions, a major producer of television programming for U.S. and international markets.

Join us on March 18 at Cien Ojos Studio for an interactive workshop exploring how music can serve as a powerful tool for storytelling, resistance, and collective action. Led by acclaimed musicians and cultural activists Abel Sanchez, Andres Alegria, and other special guests, this session will invite participants to examine how songwriting can give voice to lived experience and advance movements for justice. Drawing from rich traditions of protest music and community-based performance, the artists will share insights from their creative practices and guide participants through reflections on how songs can uncover hidden histories, build solidarity, and inspire change. Through conversation and collaborative exercises, participants will consider how music can amplify the stories that shape our communities and connect art with social transformation.

🗓️ Wednesday, March 17
⏰ 5:30 – 7:30 PM
📍 Cien Ojos Studio | 1740 Canal St.

Space is limited! Use the QR code or the link in our bio to register.

This event is hosted in partnership with the C-Vibe Project and the UC Climate Action Arts Network (UC CAAN).
