Hong Kong-raised artist Cici Wu brings traditional Chinese lantern-making techniques into contemporary art in her latest solo exhibition, Auld Lang Syne (prelude), at 47 Canal in New York. Featuring 11 handmade paper lanterns illuminated by pulsating LED lights, the installation creates a cinematic interplay of light and shadow, evoking memories, longing and the passage of time. Inspired by the song Auld Lang Syne, the exhibition reflects on themes of loss, belonging and the experiences of displacement.

From her early studies at City University of Hong Kong’s School of Creative Media to her artistic practice in New York, Wu continues to draw on Hong Kong as an important anchor for her work. Through film, archival materials and luminous sculptures, she explores the connections between personal memories, collective history and Hong Kong identity.

Discover how this Hong Kong-raised artist transforms light and traditional craftsmanship into poignant reflections on the past and the meaning of home. https://47canal.us/artists/cici-wu
