RFID or NFC - which one should you worry about? They are related. NFC is a subset of RFID that operates at 13.56 MHz over short range, and it is exactly what your bank card, transit card and government ID use. So blocking 13.56 MHz covers the NFC threat to your cards.

What you do not need to worry about for your wallet: 125 kHz building badges and UHF supply-chain tags. Those are different frequencies and not card threats. A good product is precise about this rather than overselling.

What is FIPS-201? It is the US federal standard that defines contactless government IDs - and, crucially, how their shielding is measured at 13.56 MHz. It is the actual bar most consumer RFID wallets were never tested against.

Why it matters to a traveler: if a product cannot tell you what standard it passed, no one measured whether it works. FIPS-201 is a real, public benchmark. Alpine Rivers® PolyShield™ polymer was independently verified to it in 2016 (GSA APL #1424).
