Another hot rod buttoned up and ready to go home!

This beautiful 1960 El Camino came in for some upgrades to its electronics system including:
-The new FiTech Fuel Injection LS DBW system
-A Jim Miller transmission controller for the 6L80E
-Brushless fan with controller from PROFORM Parts

We ran into a number of snags on this project but were able to get this to be a true dialed in street car!

The owner spared no expense over the last 16 years building this beauty. The vehicle features:

- Chevrolet Performance LS3/6L80E combo
- Dakota Digital RTX gauges
- Roadster Shop chassis with all the goodies
- Electronic brake booster
- Vintage Air AC
- And it even has modern cooled and heated seats reupholstered to match the vehicle’s interior

Got l**e? 👀

The shop boat has had a strange oil pressure issue for a while. After running under load, oil pressure would start to drop.

So we started checking the usual suspects:

🔧 Pump-to-pan clearance ✔️
🛢️ Cylinder head drainback ✔️
📏 Oil capacity ✔️

That left the oil itself.

After limited run time last season between engine break-in, carb tuning, and the possibility of water intrusion, the oil definitely needed to be changed. And when we drained it, there was a noticeable gasoline smell. ⛽

Fuel dilution was looking like our culprit.

But we decided to add some insurance with an oil filter relocation and Canton Racing Products Accusump. It gave us additional oil capacity, oil temperature data, easier oil changes, and a huge safety net if we ever experience sudden oil pressure loss.

Of course, we still had to figure out where the hell to put it in an already crowded 18’ jet boat. 😂

Enter Autodesk Fusion

We designed this 1/4” aluminum stringer mount around the existing rail kit mounts while still leaving room for storage under the gunnel. Sent the design to SendCutSend.com and had the finished part in our hands about a week later.

The oiling situation has improved, but we’re still seeing pressure drop once the engine gets screaming hot. Having oil temp data has made diagnosing it MUCH easier.

We’ve pulled a little timing and are taking it easy on her while we put some more break-in time on the engine.

Next step? Liquid-to-liquid oil cooler. 🌡️🛢️

Throwback to our OG Bandit build! 🏁🍻

Picture this:

🍺 A beer company
🔥 A black Trans Am
👰 A bride-to-be
🚔 And a whole lot of trouble

This Trans Am was built as a promotional project for a local beer company that took the country by storm after a major beer brand made some questionable marketing decisions.

The car was eventually raffled off to one lucky winner back in 2024, and believe it or not, that lucky winner lives in Texas. 🤠

We were brought in to turn this Bandit-inspired Trans Am into a reliable car that its new owner could actually enjoy.

The mission included:

🔧 Holley Sniper EFI
⚡ Complete chassis rewire
⛽ Brand-new fuel system
🔋 New battery cables

And if that wasn’t Smokey and the Bandit enough for you, here’s another fun fact:

We finished this project just a few short months before I proposed to my now-wife. Fortunately for me, she went through with the wedding. 😂

Looking back, I really wish we had planned things a little better. If we had, maybe we could’ve convinced the owner to let us borrow this thing for our getaway car.

After all… what better way to leave your own wedding than in a black Trans Am?

Don’t blink, oh wait..

Here’s another behind the scenes look at some product development in the works!

We wanted to come up with a solution for a turn signal and hazard module we can integrate into some of our larger circuit boards.

With this we’re able to drive both LEDs and conventional bulbs and at a fairly comparable price to some of the other options available on the market.

This is one step closer for us to be able to complete a chassis harness fuse panel that offers a more modern look and improves upon many of the shortcomings of more traditional universal harness kits. The goal is to bridge the gap between those kits and full custom PDM setups that tend to be cost prohibitive for many builds.

Now that we have a solid, proven circuit design we’re ready to move this to a PCB and start a run of prototypes.

Let’s learn a new skill! Just trust me, you’ll be fine

We’ve been working on a lot of things in the background this year and we’re really excited about this one!

We’ve often struggled to find good power distribution products that fit our needs for our engine harnesses. Either they’re too bulky, they don’t have a good amount of outputs, they take too long to wire, or they’re cost prohibitive for most builds. That’s why we decided it was important that we start exploring the possibility of making one of our own!

With all these issues in mind we are close to a viable solution that checks all those boxes. By spending some time on the front end of this design we’ll be able to cut down on assembly time for our engine harness fuse boxes, provide solid state control of circuits in a robust form and save the end user money!

This is just one of a handful of PCB designs we’ve been working on that we hope to have on test vehicles before the end of the year and if all goes well set for production sometime in 2027! Keep an eye out on updates on this project!

Another day another practical CAD design. ➡️➡️➡️

Do you remember that 2jz swapped s13 we made a custom engine harness for? The first step in all our wiring jobs is mounting all the components, this Haltech elite ecu was no exception.

Space was limited on this car so we t**e some inspiration from Nissan and designed and printed a mount in the passanger kick panel.

This was a high infill ABS-GF with this walls to provide great structural support and rigidity. Notice the recessed hex sections that we were able to use to capture the m6 nuts we used for mounting.

With the ecu and other components mounted our harness measurements became much more accurate.

Remember that VW Beetle we posted about last week? Turns out, she needed another custom part. We needed a mount to hold the speed sensor for the Dakota digital gauges we were installing. We were able to design and 3D print a mount that allowed us to move forward with installing the fuse panel and Dakota digital computer. One step closer to getting this baby road-worthy!
